coral that died

Hi I’m working on setting up a reef tank and my LFS has lots of coral that died during shipping. He putts them in a bucket in back. Can I put them in my tank with live rocks and other coral? There dry and stink real bad. I thought that they might make good filler or put them in my refuge tank.

I am not sure although there must be a reason the coral is dead. It may be a diseases or parasite.

I personally wouldnt use them.

live rock itself is made simply from the calcium carbonate skeletons of long dead corals, or other calcareous organisms, So there would be no reason for you not to put in your tank but i would wash through in RO water for a few days before introducing, and introduce slowly and watch ammonia levels

In the old days, we use to bleach dead corals and sea shells. Before we placed them in our tanks.

It could also be that the coral got too hot or cold, or it wasn't in moving water for feeding, or it wasn't in light. It doesn't necessarily have to be a disease or parasite.

It would make good calcium reactor media now...
