| Name That Guppy! Well, for those of you that haven't seen my n00b thread, hi, I'm new to this forum but definitely not new to the world of aquariums. However, I am kinda new to the guppy scene, as I currently have a 10G tank setup in my bedroom with a really docile female betta, two peppered corycats, and five guppies, three of which being female and two being male. One of my males has a really distinct grid-like pattern on him, though I believe him to be some sort of mutated yellow tuxedo variant.
The other one, however, has me totally stumped. There were only two like him in the entire tank at Petsmart but the other one didn't look healthy, so I only got this guy, but he just seemed like a special fish. His fin is actually split, like a scissortail, though the center portion of it is clear but is much shorter than the top and bottom. The fin in general is a bit nipped-up, which was even worse when I got him and is already on its way to healing now that he's in safe and sound in a nice, gentle tank and not shoved in a pet store tank with tons of other males
At first I just thought his colorings were cool because they're so random, but after doing some research on here, it appears that endlers look a lot like guppies but have "paint splashes" for markings and often times are neon colors, which guppies are not. It's hard to tell in these pictures, but this guy is a literal rainbow of bright and neon colors, and the way the colors run is just unlike anything I've ever seen before.
So is he some sort of endler/guppy hybrid or just a really cool-marked guppy?

| Post # 86 in the thread has a pretty good shot of my Lyre Tail Guppies.
See if your baby resembles them. Lucy's Tanks
I don't have experience with endlers. Last edited by Lucy; March 4th, 2010 at 11:08 PM.

| Wow Lucy, Ripper (the affectionate name my girlfriend has given the little guy) looks identical to your lyretail gang! Are these uncommon? I've never heard of these before, even when doing tons of Google searches for various fish.

| your mistery boy is a lyretail! they are very pretty and rather hard to find. i used to have one named Erik (for all u Phantom of the Opera fans out there. and his girlfriend's name was Christine <3333 ). he looked just like that, and the top ridge of his dorsal fin would change color too, being an intensly dark black, bright and vibrant yellow, or bight white. his body also changed colors when chasing after the females, getting a metalic blue hue (i'll see if i can get some pics of him up! i miss him so much =( moving to the 20 gallon was too much stress on him, Christine, Baby and Gerard --as in Gerard Butler lol--....)
p.s.~ while i was typing, Masquerade came on my iPod, then The Phantom of The Opera lol even my iPod loves the Phantom <3
i found some pix!
~the 1st one was Erik's regular colors
~the 2nd and 3rd ones are good ones of his "courting" colors, u can see how he is kinda blueish. in the 2nd one, he his dancing for his Christine (he didnt like to share with Calcifer lol). he was something else >.<
~the 4th one Calcifer, and he is the only one pictured i still have after the move
~ the female is oviously Christine lol the boys got switched off every few months to keep the fry varried, as i wasn't alowed to get more fish at the time.... Last edited by Akari_32; March 5th, 2010 at 08:23 PM.

| Wow, that's really neat. Who would've thought that Petsmart would have a really rare fish in there, plus I think he was on sale for $1 too, haha. Thanks for sharing, Akari, your Erik looks identical to my Ripper

| Well, I've never really had guppies before this. I've always stuck to fish like minnows (I know they're just food for most people's tanks, but I've genuinely loved raising them), goldfish, tetras, and many others. However, I must say that the guppies are absolutely gorgeous and are really fun to watch. I think the only fish that I've ever owned that's been more fun to watch than these guppies are my clown loaches, but those obviously need a much bigger tank.
Go get yourself some guppies and sit back and admire them

-Brian | thank u! i still have his fry at least. hopefully, they will look like their daddy, and get pretty colors and tails >.< i have a few males that look just like their mom tho, with charcoal bodies and bright blue tails! i cant wait to see how the females turn out! -spaz- Erik was really cheap, like 2-something i think, the same price as all the Fancy males. i've only seen them a few other times tho, and only when i wasnt in need of more Quote: |
