Guppy - Death From Childbirth?

Hey. I've 3 Guppies (originally 4) and 4 phantom black tetras now. I've had all of these since monday when I purchased the fishies. my water was tested and they said it was all fine, they even showed me the results. seemed all clear.

Last night, I noticed my female Guppy started to give birth to fry, I left her be - I'm aware the mother eats the fry if they're not seperated but I'm new to keeping fishies, so I don't have the breeding necessities yet - anyhows, I woke up this morning, saw a few of the fry swimming around, the mother seemed fine. I came back this afternoon to find the mother dead hidden underneath a fake plant. I think some of the fry remain. All the other fish seem fine, and the mother should be replaced due to a warranty pets at home has.

Also when I finally netted her out of the aquarium, she looked absolutely fine, except from being dead, of course. I'm very curious as to what caused this, are guppies known to die after they've given birth sometimes? anyone, who has some past experience with this sort of stuff?

All constructive help is welcome. thanks

Welcome to FishLore

I'm sorry about your guppy.

Your thread might get the attention of members who know about guppies if you changed the title of your thread to reflect your question.

Good luck

Hiya Luny!!

I have always had that problem with Guppies!?!?! Don't know why, If I can get a good pregnant female , and she gives birth the babies always live. (I think it is the soft acidic water in my case) Within 3 weeks of buying them they always die!!! Your ok now the babies should make it.

How new is your tank??

Please fill in your tank info so we can always help you....my comments to you are based on the fact that you have fish....more info could disclose some other issues for losing fish.

Done - and thankyou very much

I don't have a testing kit yet, should be getting one this following weekend.
Not even sure about the fry, none seem to be visible atm, but they were awfully difficult to spot last night. I've a fake moss-type ball in the aquarium, so hopefully they've found cover there.

My tank was set-up near enough two weeks ago. 11 days to be exact.
