So confused....

I have 2 guppies which I both thought were male (larger more colorful tails). But recently one has been acting weird and has developed a large bulge in its stomach. It is possible a guppy i thought was male is actually female? or is my male guppy ill?

Sure looks like a male. Could it be bloated from over feeding?

Good morning.
The guppy does look like a male to me too. Too I don't see a gravid spot. (dark area behind the anal fin) In most cases the gravid spot may indicate pregnancy. Did the swelling happen over night or a couple of nights? It would take a pregnant female longer than that to get that big.

Peas are a good suggestion just in case it is a male and it's constipated. Too you can feed the fish pre-soaked freeze dried daphnia to help it relieve itself. These too foods act as a laxative for fish.

To prep the peas....I use thawed, frozen peas, (canned peas usually contain salt so they aren't recommended) slice them in half and remove the skin. Then I slice them into sizes about the same size as one of the fishes eyes. It may take a feeding or two before it realizes that it's food. If it doesn't take the pea then fast the tank for 1 day and try again.

Best of luck and please keep us posted.

He guys thanks for all the help!
I will try the peas but I don't think it's constipation, he has been pooing (although it's been white).
This morning I found him hiding in a rock, just kinda sitting on the bottom. He is still alive, but not very active.

can you try getting a better pic? I have a female that looks almost the same coloring.....look for a macro setting on your camera...its like a little flower icon.....as far as being lethargic, have you tested the water lately? the tank is so new, it could be a water issue as well...what are your latest readings for ammonia/nitrites/nitrates? how was the tank cycled so fast? I hope things look up soon!!!!

Duh, i never even thought of the macro setting, I was too busy using the aquarium setting, silly me. I apologize Shawnie, I have LED you a stray. This poor guppy is in my other tank, water was changed 4 days ago and currently sits at 0,0,10.
Off to try to get a better pic!
