| I'm with Shawnie. My guppies are all over the place. They need more room than a 5g.
With a male and female you'd need someplace to put the fry. |

| I have guppies too, and I also agree that they are not appropriate for a 5 gallon. They are surprisingly aggressive fish. |

| thats cool...

| They will go to breeding tank (5g) Then once the gravid spot appears. Put the female guppy in a breeder box she will lay the fry in the box Thus not having to catch baby fish
After the breeding process they will go with my tetras in a 29g |

| I'm gonna disagree with the majority. Although I do agree that a 5 gal tank isn't the best idea for guppies, since you already have one and do not want shrimp or a Betta, I don't think you will have a problem if you put three of four male guppies in the tank. I have been breeding guppies for about a year now, and I keep all my male guppies in a 30 gal hex and females in a 20 gal tank. I take two or three of my best males and put them in the "female" tank. I must have 25-30 males in the hex tank and I have no problems. I also agree with Shawnie, that a 5gal is good for a short period of time to grow out fry (that's what I do). One more thing, what ever you decide, remember to save some room for "maintenance" fish. You may need some ottos when you start getting algae on the glass. |

Save room? There won't be any room in a 5 gallon with several guppies |

| Bio levels are small with guppies and ottos. Three/four guppies and one or two ottos will be fine in a five gal |

| But aren't there other considerations, like filtration and swim space? |

I think we should look at something else here.
Can you put guppies in a 5g tank? Sure, you can.
But why would you when they are obviously active fish?
Because we want them? Imo, that's not fair to the fish. Last edited by Lucy; January 2nd, 2010 at 10:56 PM.

| There are always other concerns. Obviously the better the filtration, the more water changes, vacuuming, and number of plants will all make a difference. If your as crazy as me, I over filter, 50% water changes once a week, vacuum every other week, and keep my tanks heavily planted, I would even throw in two Cory cats! |

if the op is insistent on adding/breeding guppies in a 5g tank, id suggest buying a few females already pregnant and skip any males... |

You need to be a little more patient and not bump your thread.

Shawnie, I totally agree with you, females and 5 gals should not even be put in the same sentence! Not even one lone female because more than likley the LFS had it with a male at one time and we all know that leads into disaster.
But if I'm not mistaken, the original post CB had a 5 gal tank and didn't know how to stock it (excluding shrimp or Betta). And my suggestion (without buying a new setup) was that he would be fine with 3 or 4 "males" and when algae starts to build up one or two ottos will not destroy his bio system.
What gets me frustrated is that I wish this post was started a few hours earlier because I took out my guppy fry in my 5 gal last week and it's been sitting there with two ottos for a week. I could have thrown a few "males" in and video taped it for you but I spent all day changing around some of my Bettas, and one of my male Bettas are homed in the 5 gal tank so it's too late. Quote: |

| how you stock your tanks isnt a bannable offense other wise id have been banned years ago and temporary tanks are great....we all use them a time or two....temporarily is the key word IMO
I can only advice what I do know about my expeirences with them and to me, its just a disaster thats going to happen keeping them in a 5g tank ...but everyone has a right to do as they wish with their own tanks |
