My guppies attacking live plants

Hello again,

I have set my tank up with some mosses and a bunch of java fern.
Few days ago, I planted anacharis to make my tank full. but it seems like my guppies dont like the intruder. They are constantly stichting the plant with their mouth. Some parts of the plant areadly look ragged. Will this kill the plant and are my guppies hungry even after meal or are they just playing around?

Hi TheKayman!! Hope you are enjoying fishLore!!!!

Guppies usually don't attack plants. What kind of fish food are you using?? They do like plant matter and if they don't get any, they just might visit your salad bar.

See if maybe you can get hold of some algae flakes or another fish food that is high in greens.

Hope this might help you!!

I was feeding them:
tetramin flakes, Omega One freeze dried brine shrimps, and Hikari Daphnia.

I think I was focusing on high protein and overlooked veggie diet...
For 'the fish good that is high in green' is it enough with just one type of algae flakes?

Oh, a mixed diet is great for them!! But greens are also important with the protein. They may have been picking algae off your plants and mosses.

Most live bearing fish are a bit vegetarian,...actually veggies are good for all fish. Variety is good for them as it is for us. Try that and see if the plant nipping stops.

I used to mix my flakes into one canister....little this, little that!!

Thats a tough question for me!!! I know spirulina is excellent, maybe you could just find some spirulina flakes and mix them with the current tetramin flakes....keeps the cost down too!!
Guppies really aren't considered to plant eaters...what's happening for u is unusual to actually have damage!! At first I thought they were just picking something off of your plants, til u mentioned the damage to the plant edges.
So just a spirulina supplement should do just fine.
