what to put in tank with guppies?

One of my guppies from my 7.5gal reasontly died, so now I only have 4 guppies in there. I want to add some other fish in there too, but not sure what to get, or how many.

Also there is quite a lot of algae in the tank, so would (if I can) like to get a small fish thats eats algae. I'd like to get otos, but can't find them anywhere around me, and when I asked at my lfs they had never heard of them, so I don't know what to do.

Any ideas what I could get?

Thanks

How about 1 or 2 Corys?

Exiting little fish that will take care of your algae and will be a joy to watch.

They prefer to be in pairs at least but having one will be fine, heres some examples of different cories you can get

Thanks for the suggestions. Do corries eat algae?

I did have 3 panda corries that I was going to add to the tank, but unfortnately, one by one they died, before I put them in the tank and were still in the Q tank. I might try again with some corries, but not sure yet.

I have Chinese Algae Eaters and they get along fine with my guppies. Plus they will clean your tank glass and plants (fake or real plants).

Cories don't eat algae. CAE's do at first, but they grow big and mean and don't eat algae as much. The tank is pretty full so idk if I'd add anything elso.

Chinese Algae Eaters can't live in a 7.5 gallon aquarium. It is too small. They will also get territorial as they grow....so beware....

I have a sucker in with my guppies and he doen't seem to have time to worry about them, he's far to buisy sucking everything thats not floating. He's not the typical brown platy but he's in the same family. this one is tan, longer than a garbage fish, and quite active. Always keeps me laughing, where he gets himself for algae

Mollies like algae, but they can get rather large. Consider a ramshorn snail. They're great grazers, and WON'T hurt your fish. (they may eat any live plants, however)

I would put Corys in the tank. They are fun to watch and will take care of cleaning up your tank. Ghost shrimp running around on the bottom will help pick up the extra food scraps. I don't know about the shrimp eating algae, but they would be fun to watch with the guppies.

Re: what to put in tank with guppies?

I would stick it out and find a store that carries the oto cats. they will rid your tank of algae, only grow up to 1.5-2 inches and are very peaceful.

Get 1 or 2 of them, and they form and excellent cleaning crew, it's unbelievable. i've got 2 right now with 3 guppies in a 10gal. if you're desperate though, you can always grab a few cory cats, they are pretty good scavangers as well and make for good tank mates with guppies.

Re: what to put in tank with guppies?

yeah I just recently got a 32 gallon tank so I could give the guys some more room. I will probably build up some of their schools. How many fish do you think I should have total in the 32-gallon tank?

Re: what to put in tank with guppies?

the rule of thumb is about an inch per gallon. the inch being the final expected adult size, not the current size. however, there are other things to take into account like the bulkiness of the fish. the bulkier fish tend to have more waste (ammonia) than the tiny fish like tetras. algae eaters like plecs etc tend to be big waste producers too from what i've heard. also some common sense too.....a 10 inch fish would not be happy in a 10 gal tank! when you start getting close to fully stocked your water quality can be affected (which you may have alread noticed?) so more water changes may be required to meet the correct parameters. so may need twice weekly rather than weekly. hope this helps?

Re: what to put in tank with guppies?

Yes that helps a lot. I was thinking that if I build up the schools of the tetras so I had 4 each of the Pristella and Glowlight tetras and then 4 guppies and 5 Corys. Do you think that would be sufficient and within good parameters for the 32-gallon tank?
