Tranfer a Guppy

I have 1 male guppy in a 5 gallon tank. This tank used to hold 2 white cloud minnows- but both died recently.

Since the tank held white clouds- the tank is not heated, on a good day it's about 72 degrees. I want to move the guppy into a 55 gal community but the temp is 80 degrees and I don't want to kill him.

I was planning to put him in a bag and let him float for 20 minutes- but is that long enough for that big of a temp change?

Any "guppy advice" appreciated!

If the water parameters are the same in your 5g as the 55 floating him for 20 min. should be fine.

I'd float him in the bag in the new tank, adding some water from the tank every 5 minutes or so. If you have a digital thermometer probe or 2, you could use them to see when the temps are close. The time it takes can vary, and if you have any doubt after 20 minutes, keep acclimating longer.

i'm with COBettaCouple, every tank is different so it's worth it to add water to his bag even if your parameters are the same to let your guy adjust as easily as possible. hanging the bag for closer to 30 minutes may be worth it, and i'd also put your thermometer in there to be sure as well.

How did the transfer go?

The transfer hasn't happened yet. Lately I've been having multiple problems with multiple tanks and fish. One tank had a cycle crash, so I'm not moving any fish until everything is back to normal. Then I'm going to re-do my tank (decoration wise) when I do my water change. I watch my tanks a lot- so I get bored VERY quickly we the scenery.

Do you have any extra filter sponges in the other tanks? You could seed the crashed tank with those. I like to stuff every filter with sponges in case something like that happens or if I need to setup a new tank fast.

What kind of sponges?

The filter sponges (usually black). They can store massive amounts of beneficial bacteria.

I've always used corner box filters (for my 20 gal or less size tanks)- can I put the sponges in those?

I guess it's kind of the same thing- I put used filter floss in new tanks to help them get started.

A sponge works fine in a box filter. It will need to be cut to size to fit though. Another way to use a box filter, which I am doing in one of my tanks, is to fill the space where the carbon would go with ceramic biomedia. The floss over the top keeps the fry from being sucked up and the biomedia does a great job of handling ammonia from the fish.
