Sick Guppy

Hi,

i have been having water problemslately so even though my male guppy has not been at his best I have not considered that he may have something wrong with him.

Today however the tank is getting back on track and the clouds have lifted and I got a good look at him.

He seems to have some protruberance under his belly. I am now quite concerned about it i have managed to get a few not very good pictures I would be grateful for opinions of what is wrong with him and having worked that out what I can do for him.

Again apologies for the picture quality I can take pictures clear as a bell with this camera from 100yards away but not at a macro level.

The 3rd pic it shows up as an orange amorphous blob under the fish if I didnt think it would stress him too much I would net him into the Hospital tank I can get better shots of it there as its small and he can swim as much to get away being camera shy

I transferred him to the Hospital tank via a wine glass so these may be a bit clearer

if it is a prolapse just leave it and it should go down with time

I was hoping that was not the diagnosis, if he was a dog I would not have needed confirmation. But then I have been keeping dogs for over 40 years and fish for less than 1.

And a good vet can fix that in a dog. I will try not feeding him for a few days and see if that helps but it dosn't look good

A prolapse ....hmm I guess that's where something that should be on the inside isn't ...like a cow can have a prolapsed uterus after it has a calf...they sometimes push the uterus out of the body. It is a medical emergency and can be surgically replaced. I have had chickens before with a prolapsed uterus before and never really realized what it was till the other chickens had pecked it and it was to late...not sure if fish can have prolapses...I was thinking kinda like a prolapse rectum or anus ...and if that is what it is how you could fix it...now this is only my idea and not based on any kind of knowledge or experience.

prolapse is where part of the stomach/intestines come out of a fishes rectum basically

it can be fatal, sometimes it will return as normal but may have an infection and kill the fish, its very hit and miss with fish

Yeah I would say there is not a good chance for the fish...but you never know. For pets and livestock it can be fixed by the vet...not sure if fish can suck it back in or not. guess it depends on why it came out.

yeah he is swimming fine he occasionally goes and has a rest in the plants and is missing his girls.

I have a couple of other fish in the Hospital tank at the moment but if the main tank parameters are still ok in the morning I will be moving them back to the Main so he will be on his own. In which case I will move my solitary remaining Oto in there as non agressive company.

(all will be revealed when war and peace, I mean my blog, gets posted, It has been a traumatic week or so in my tanks)

it seems like he should still be able to live normally barring some kind of infection or something like that
