Guppy that can't swim...

Hi guys,

ON eof my dad's guppy's is not looking too good this evening. He is on the bottom alot, and appears to be struggling to swim. When he does he tilts upside down & ends up back at the bottom after a couple of minutes.

He has a 90 litre heated & filtered aquarium, 5 male guppies and 3 (new) male platys in...

Any ideas?! He has only had them about 3 weeks.

Can I do anything to help him!?

Are any other fish acting weird or just that one? Have you test the water? It could be a bacteria or virus that some how got on the tank.

The water is all fine, and none of the other fish are acting strange - all perfectly normal...?! He is the smallest Guppy, maybe he's a runt & is weaker?!

Hi,
Sorry your dad's guppy is sick.
Can you tell us what the readings are for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.
How long has he been like this?
Are there any signs or marks on him anything not normal?
Has he been eating?
Can you set up a hospital tank

whenever anyones not feeling well and has no signs of illness, id do a 50% water change with some prime or stress coat + to revive them and make them feel better.....do you know his water parimeters exactly? sounds like some signs of ammonia

Like piper said you might need to put him on a separate tank. Verify level and according to the readings get the right stuff for it but to me looks like ammonia poisoning. If you see any markings on the side, or bleeding? It might be a fungal infection. Sorry.

As I said in the first post I am asking here as there are no answers in the Guppy post - or there weren't at the time. And as it is bedtime over here I wanted a fast answer to see if I could help.

I have a Betta and use this site often so I thought I'd get the best answer here.

Amonia 0, Nitrate 0 , Nitrite 0 , pH 7.6

50% water change done, another Guppy dead this morning. This one went quick, no signs of illness altho noticed he was hovering at the top alot last night.

The 2 that have died were the 2 smallest, their bodies hadn't really filled out like the other 3's have. They were still skinny & small & paler in colour.

Is it becasue he added Platy's? I haven't seen any signs of bullying...

Hi pamelakt. Guppys in the UK are REALLY interbred and have lost a lot of their natural immunities. I always found it was better to add Guppies to a tank that has been establihed for a few months. They only need something slightly out of whack and will die for apparantly no reason. At 3 weeks the tank might not be cycled yet?

this may sound silly but how big is his tail? i've seen guppies who had tails that were so large they could hardly move.

No they are only young tailes are still pretty small. The 3 remaining ones are really brightly coloured, they've fattened out, and their tails have grown. these 2 were the same as when he got them.

The tank was cycled using Tetra SafeStart - I've used it myself & have had no problems with it. I guess maybe they were interbred like you said... my dad LOVES Guppies, he is gutted. What a shame

Does the Guppy look bent or unusually bloated? Does he have a quarentine tank or maybe even a floating fish trap that you could isolate him from the others to determine what the problem is and keep the other fish from picking on him.

I merged the two threads. The posts may seem out of whack since when they merge they are listed according to the time posted.

It's best to create one thread in the appropriate board for the same question.
Thanks

Am I understanding correctly that the guppy is actually tipping upside down? If so, that sounds like a swim bladder issue.
Isolating it will give it a peaceful environment, which may help it heal.
Also, a bit of a pea might help clear things up if it's a swim bladder issue.
