Will it work in my tank?

Hi again Fishlore! I have a 46 gallon which I haven't stocked yet. I thought I had everything figured out until my brother suggested a Guppy. I thought about it for awhile, and decided that it would be a nice addition to the tank. I'll have these fish in the tank:

6 Cherry barbs
3 Cories
1 Dwarf Gourami
1 Golden Wonder Killifish
3 Kuhli Loaches
1 Angelfish
1 Bristlenose Pleco

That's around 45 inches of fish. So 2 inches more would be 47 and slightly overcrouded, but I have 2 very nice filters that I think could handle the job. Would there be any problems with the Guppy and the other fish that I should know about? Are there any specific needs of the Guppy to make it more comfortable? Oh, and a bigger concern of mine, would the Cherry barbs nip at such a flowish fin (along with the Angelfish)? Or any other fish for that matter. Thanks in advance!

Adult Angelfish, Dwarf Gourami, and even possibly the Cherry Barbs would probably kill the guppys... small guppys are actually used as feeder fish for Angels.

The Angelfish and the Dwarf Gourami may also fight... they are both very territorial.

I had a 7" angelfish (yea exceeded their supposed max size) that lived with fancy tailed guppies and never bothered any of them, then again they said angels can be very aggressive at times especially during feeding but mine never showed any aggression in 2 years I had him. Unfortunately he died this week with the power being out It's all about experimenting, each fish has their own personality. Might be worth a shot, if guppies get harassed bring them back and try another fish.

Personality is definitely a big factor... along with raising the angels around other fish, if they grow up from juveniles around guppys, then they may not look at them as food.

Yea that's true my angel was young when she was brought home into a tank with guppies, didn't think that an already matured adult might be more inclined to munch.

I had a mated pair that I raised by themselves... their favorite snack was guppys lol. Some other angels I raised from very small (nickel size) with guppys and they never did bother them... of course they didnt stay in the tank with the guppys when they got larger though lol.

I tried to mate her but I think she liked other females...

When my two DGs were still alive (darn iridovirus) they never even touched the guppies, but I would definately not put an angel in with them or the gourami.

Hmm... I was planning on getting a young Angel. Unfortunetly I already bought the Dwarf Gourami (Big mistake. The tank isn't cycled yet). I wanted the Angelfish for like a big "center piece" fish. Is there any thing that could substitute for it? And then I could get the Guppy, and Ross (my Dwarf Gourami) wouldn't have any problems. But would the Guppy be OK with Ross? I was thinking of a larger Guppy, probably already full grown to minimize any problems. My heart isn't set on the Guppy, but I think it would be really cool to have. Thanks for all the advice everyone!

With Gouramis that are already established in a tank, it either hit or miss as to whether they will accept any new tankmates...

Alright then. If things get bad once I get some more fish, then I'll try removing the Dwarf Gourami for a couple of days and reintroduce it to the tank. I think that may solve any territory issues I may have (I did this with my Convict Cichilds, and now they're fine together!).

Again, as long as there is plenty of both swimming/hiding space and the tank is stable I dont think you will have any problems. I introduced my guppies to the tank when I had not one, but two gouramis, and there never were problems at all.

Although there is always the possibility to come across a neurotic one... in which case you already said you will remove the gourami and reintroduce him a couple of days later.
