has anyone got any ideas as to what happened to my male guppy. I have a 126Litre tank with 6 goldfish 1 of them a 18cm long Bronze Shubunk, 4 medium sized Golden Barbs 2 females 2 males, and 3 guppies 1 male 2 female, the male was happily chasing the 2 females around the tank lastnight trying to get his way with them and was healthy and happy. Tonight when i went to feed them he is no where to be found. I have taken the ornaments out of the tank and looked inside them etc but he is not there. have even checked the filter to see if he died and got sucked into it but alas nothing. The Golden Barbs and goldfish have NEVER bothered the guppies before and find it hard to believe that any of them would have eaten him.

I also have nine 1 week old guppy fry in seperate tank and they are thriving nicely, at what age can you tell the sex of these guppy fry?

Guppy fry are usually sexable by age 2 months. It can be as early as 1 month if all conditions are peak. (Frequent waterchanges, not overfeeding, but good quality foods given.)

Goldfish could certainly eat the guppy, but perhaps look in ornaments or substrate for remains of a corpse. You do know that goldfish and guppies have different needs, correct? Goldfish are temperate water fish and guppies are tropical, so their temperature needs are different.

thank you for your reply, i realise this and have a heater in my tank as i have 4 other tropical fish in there also (golden Barbs). a fish specialist (hollywood fish farm who only deals in fish), who my husband and i deal with said the guppies are fine in a slightly cooler than normal tank. I have my goldfish/tropical tank set at 22C which is fine for both they have been thriving nicely in there and living peacefully then all of a sudden hes gone overnight. have taken ornaments out and looked in them for any remains and checked the gravel etc. i looked for over an hour to try to find him but no where to be found.

I think maybe Chief_Waterchanger is right ...One of the Goldfish could have eaten your Male Guppie! I would have never thought that Guppies And Golfish could be together.. I have Guppies and Neon Tetras. Both are happily breeding away (Not interbreeding of course)

well after the 1st male disappeared i got another one and took the golden barbs out of the tank cause i thought maybe they were eating them, but the 2nd 1 disappeared too. none of the females did tho and the males used to hide behind the filter outlet etc, had plenty of plants etc for them too. yes guppies and goldfish can live in the same tanks quite happily as goldfish can live in a wide range of water conditions including warmer temperatures.

Have put all my guppies in a 65ltr tank of their own and got 12 adults in total now and 20 fry. 2 of my guppies had babies 2 weeks apart was awesome too because i managed to time it right and watch them both give birth!! so i have 2 1/2 week old and 2 day old fry now.

The babies (fry) are so cute..I love when they start getting thier color and they all look so different.

18 cm shubunkin....hmmm that is over 6 inches and a goldie that size could very well eat a guppy.....I think the golds are the culprit....also females are larger than males and a little more wary as they are being chased by the males all the time and so could possibly evade whoever is eating them....males are more interested in...umm..well..lets just say they only have one thing on their minds....lol ...so they are not quite as watchfull.
