Aggressiveness in guppys

Has anyone ever had problems with aggressive guppys? I had two male guppys and they would not stop picking on my platys. They kept nipping at them and chasing them around the tank. They became so aggressive that I had to take them back to the pet store.

We have had many guppy families over the years. I have noticed the males are very aggressive when there are no females to occupy them. I would suggest 2-3 females per male. They will reproduce and a breeder net (I bought one at Walmart) will protect the young. Good luck!

And that is exactly right. There were no females in the tank with them. Thankyou for your advice and i will try that next time, most likely when i switch to a larger tank. Thanks again!

I have 4 male guppies that are also very agressive to each other... although i have always been afraid of overpopulation... and I also have no heart of seeing fry getting eaten!

I simplytry to distract them with a bloodworm crushed into little pieces...or put my hand in the aquarium so that they get distracted, separate and stop the fight (which sometimes gets really bad). My platies are agressive too, but not as much.

Yeah I might go out and get some bloodworms. They provide the fish with excellent protein and fish seem to like them alot. The only thing is theyre kinda messy. Yeah its weird my sunkis platty chases my mickeymouse one a lot and wont leave it alone and im trying to figure out why. Once in a while it will rub against it too. Oh yea since u have platies. Do u know how u can tell if theyre female?

Yes, I do and they do the exact same thing some times... livebearers are like mild agressive in my oppinion... although they will not fight to the point of killing each other thanks god, just a little "here is the boss" which can get annoying sometimes of course.

Ok, male livebearers (mollies, guppies, platies and swordtails) have a modified anal fin pointing backwards and the females dont. Also females appear rounder and bigger than males... here a pic.
