Kamikaze Guppies

So last night I came home and I looked in my tank and a couple of my fish were swimming around and then suddenly swimming into things like on purpose. Like they would swim up to the top, swim around there for a little wile, then dive striate to the gravel and hit their nose on it, or into a rock, or the side of the tank, ect. It was really weird and I was afraid of them hurting themselves. Does anyone know why they would be doing this?

Some background: I bought some ghost shrimp last week and they accidentally got a feeder guppy in there, this is fine though because I have a tank of feeder guppies, 3 female and a male. The new guppy was a male so the balance was going to be a little off, but I noticed with my tank the way it was the one male I already had didn’t seem to vigorous and tended to leave the females alone most of the time, so I thought it might be ok to add him before buying more females. This was a mistake however because as soon as I did they both went nuts and started running at my 3 females consistently. So I went out yesterday to buy more females and was going to leave them in a quarantine tank for a couple days however the 2 males stressed one of my females to death and didn’t want the same happening to the other 2 so I added them before going out for the night. That makes 4 females for 2 males, I want to get at least one more female for good measure. So what do you think?

I already have, but they didnt last long. I didnt have a fry tank set up before so the first 3 droods lasted maybe 5 days each. But I have pleant more on the way. But thanks for the fish are weird comment. As odd as it sounds I belive that could be it, although I am open to any explanation.

What are your water parameters?? high ammonia and or nitrites will cause erratic behavior in fish..try doing a water change ...Good Luck.

Yeah guppys aren't on teh protective side for their fry actually quiet the oppposite since their babies are so high in protein..but I guess you allready learned that...is it just the sides they are knocking into or is it the front as well...Try to put something on the side like a backdrop and see if that helps at all

It's not just the side of the tank, its the front, and even more so the bottom (gravel) and the rocks and plant decorations. I dont know my tank perametures since i dont think my test kit works, but I had just done a water change yesterday before adding the fish. Also I should not its not just my new fish, its all of them, bunt not always at the same time.

ok ..here's an odd question....what color is your gravel?? I know it sounds strand but from what I have heard there is sokething about fish not being comfertable with brighter colors of gravel...I'm just trying to think of all teh possibilities..oh and what size is your tank and how many fish you got in it

I have a 10 gallon with 6 fish in it, 4 females and 2 male guppies. In the tank the gravel is blues and greens I also have fake grass and another fake plant in there along with a few rocks for highding places.

are they flashing?? ( some people call it glancing or flicking) Trying to scratch themselves by rubbing on the gravel or side?? That could be a sign of water probs OR parasite like ick or velvet. Look at their skin very close and see if you see any spots. White or in the case of velvet very tiny dusty looking spots that are tan or golden in color. They are very hard to spot....good luck.

Well I know it isnt ick, I have a long a long standing history with ick and now my tank stays at 82-85 to prevent it from EVER coming back I will look out for the other spots though. I came home from work today and they seem to be doing better, I havent seen them do it since.
