Is this a normal behavior?

Hi All,

I have this male guppy for a month now. I've been feeding it flake food once a day, he likes them and eat them up fast. One day, I decided to feed it some frozen bloodworms for treat and he really loved it. However, the next day I put flake in the tank, he wouldn't eat them at all, he'll put it in his mouth and spit it back out. I tried to hungry him for 2 days and feed him flakes, but the same thing happen. But when I put in bloodworms, he chewed it up in 2 seconds. Is this normal for guppy?? Is it ok if I feed him frozen bloodworms as his primary food source from now on?

Thanks.

That is pretty normal, but not necessarily good. Very few wild animals eat only one type of food. Diets vary from day to day as what is available changes.

One possibility is that your guppy has tasted "whole" food and doesn't want to go back to stuff made out of fish meal. If you're using the Tetra flakes, this could be a big deal to him. You might want to try OmegaOne fish foods. They're made with whole fish, rather than just the junk parts (Tetra, and most of the other common fish foods, is made mostly from skin and bones). A thing of OmegaOne food is a bit more expensive, but since one container will last a single fish for many months, it's not all that big of a deal.

Another option would be to buy a few different types of freeze-dried foods and use fresh veggies to supplement the diet. This way, you can keep his diet varied.

I've given our platys and guppys bloodworms occasionally as treats, but not had that reaction. You've got yourself a pretty smart guppy or a gourmet.

Thanks for the reply, I'll give the frozen dry food a try, if they are within budget...
