New guppies...couldn't wait

Thanks to all that have been helping me decide what I should put in with my "Star"(angel).
Got two platies the other day, one sunset and one red. All went well, no fin nipping.
I was going to wait for a week to get some guppies, but I got week. Went to my LFS, and there they were...ended up coming home with three new guppies. I know I was taking chance with angel, but all went well and still is.
The manager at the store gave me a little hint, he said that if i wanted to detract the angel while I put in the guppies, to go ahead and fed him a little. Which really seemed to work. But the guppies saw the food too, and went right after it, and so did the platies.
Ended up getting a few more plants as well (live). For extra hiding for the guppies.
Hope all goes well.
Thanks again for all of the help, and the fish thank you too.

Re: New guppies...couldn't wait

Good luck with them, mine are fine so yours should be fine too. Just make sure you have 2 females and one male guppy and you need to have the same ratio with the platys or you will have stressed out fish. I believe that's true with the plattys correct me if I'm wrong. The males have pretty and large tails if you didn't know.

Re: New guppies...couldn't wait

Austin, I did end up getting 2 female and 1 male guppies, so far so good.
I believe I have 2 females. You are right about the ratios, someone said that i could do either two females or two males, but if it was a mix of male and female had to be 2:1 ratio.
So far with the platies, they are doing really really well.
But if things are going better next week I will probably end up getting more.
I think I will stick with platies, 1 angel, and guppies, if everything stays just as happy as it is now.
You guys spent so much time helping me with your ideas it is appreciated more than you all will ever know.
Thanks, Sharon

What gender are the Platys? If they are both females, you will get Guppy-Platy hybrids. If they are 1 male and 1 female, you will need to get another female.

Well it looks like I will be having hybrids. From the description that you gave me the other day, I believe that I have two females. The male guppy has already been busy with his counterparts (very interesting ---I can say that I have really never seen anything like it before). He started nudgin one of the platies...so that is why.
I guess we will find out shortly. And I guess he will be the king of the castle.
All I know is that everyone is getting along. So nice to see after the last weeks of fin nipping. Very relaxing.
Thanks, Sharon

Re: New guppies...couldn't wait

Sounds like you are fine. You have no need to get anymore fish unless you want to then. Don't worry about raising guppy fry, your angel will have a nice snack on them (YUM) unless you save them first.

Yes...you might actually want the Angel to eat the hybrids...I don't think there's anything wrong with them but the lfs probably wouldn't take them...

Re: New guppies...couldn't wait

I have reservations about letting the angel eat the fry. I dont know, but i guess it will probably happen anyway.
Soon my season will start. I am a landscape designer and horticultural specialist, so when the weather breaks I will not have time to breath let alone trying to seperate the fry. I guess it is all just natural selection anyway.
But I probably will get more fish. Like Lays potato chips, you cant have just one.
Thanks for everything, Sharon

Be carefull not to overstock, the key is over filter and under stock. Can you put your tank size and its occupants in your sig.
