i just started breeding guppies and was wandering if anyone has any advice. i bought the a pregnent female at petco and last week she had babys. i wasn't home when she had them but i found 12 and put them in a 20 gallon tank. i feed them ground up flakes and hikari First Bites. Can anyone give me hints on raising them.

hi! congrats on the fry!

I haven't had great expericne with my fry, but this batch i have at the moment seems to be doing fine. what i did when they were small was feed them ground up flakes like you're doing, but i was feeding small amounts maybe 3/4 times a day, then i gave them more, less often as they got older. I find as well if you hold the crushed flakes under the water, it's easier for the fry to get to them. Baisically let them do their own thing and make sure you have places for them to hide. maybe just a plant or 2 (fake or real). I love my fry and they've come to associate me with food now, which is quite funny cause if they see me they know i have food (i don't always obviously), but they swim to the top ready to be fed! lol My tank is right next to my bed and they are all usually lined up at the side of the tank when i wake up, its kindof cute really! Anyway, enough of my ramling on!

Good luck with your fry and let us know how they get on!

If you want fast growth get some frozen or live Baby Brine SHrimp. Makes them grow twice as fast! More frequent water changes also help them grow. Fry are more sensitive to water quality, so make sure it is good. As long as you keep up with water changes and feed them, they should make it! Good Luck and CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!

If they're in their own tank, then they just need what any fish does, food and clean water. I would use Prime as the tap water conditioner and leave the tank bottom bare for easier cleaning. Gwenz got good advice and here is a food we started feeding some fry (and adults): http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Produc...op%2Deeze&Np=1

congrats! i give them crushed flakes too! My advice is if you have a filter, make sure they dont get sucked in. Believe me it happened!

Yea put a sponge(unused, brand new, no chemicals!) or panty hose over the intake. That will protect them.

True. We use fish net netting over the intake and held in place with a rubber band. Make sure the rubber band is tight and there's no gaps in the netting that might let the fry swim in and end up in the filter box.
