How many guppies?

I'd like to stock my 10g with a few smaller fish but I don't want all of them to have the same coloration (otherwise I would be leaning towards a school of cherry barbs). Would 4-6 male guppies work in a 10g along with some ghost shrimp? I'm a little fuzzy on what a good size group is for guppies but I think I heard that groups of 4+ are ideal so nobody gets singled out?

4-6 should be just fine. All males is a great idea to keep from having fry abound. Make sure to have some dense plants (dense roots or dense plant stem/leaves) such as guppy grass, java fern, etc for the shrimp to hide in. Hope it works out for the best for ya.

As soon as I told my mother I was thinking about guppies she just gave me a face. One of the lady's she goes to church with had guppies and said they had fry all over the place and ended up giving the tank away. I'd like have some females but I don't have 1) the money for more tanks 2) the room for more tanks 3) know if my LFS will take fry.

So far I'm very fond of ghost shrimp so I'd like to have them in both 10g tanks. Now to just see how far I can go with an Atlantan theme for the little guys *ish excited*

they seem to do well even with 2 or 3.. so 4-6 males should do well.. we have 3 males in with some platys and they never seem to stop playing.

yea, you could add 3 of them 1 week and the other 2-3 the next week.

If you're planning to get 6 you might even want to add them over three weeks in groups of 2. If you're getting 5 total then better do a group of 3 to avoid having one alone in the q tank.

Two sounds good since I'm just using my 5g as a QT until I can find something else as cheap as possible. Forgot to ask the lfs guy if they take fry on the off chance I end up with a female but all I saw were males while I waited for my otos

6 should be fine. Just make sure there are enough plants and places where the males can have their own little "corner" to avoid agression. The plants will also allow the shrimp to find places to hide and lay eggs if there are males and females!! As for female guppies, if you put females in there and they give birth, most of the fry will get eaten unless separated, so you wouldn't have to worry about too many fry. You would have to ask your LFS whether they will take fry or not. Good Luck!

Guppies are super easy to sex so there's no reason why they should sell you a female if you ask for all males.
