| aggressive guppy? Grrrr... Ok, I got 3 new platys a few days ago, and I didn't have them in the tank for more than 5 minutes before one of my guppies started going after one of them. Only one, not all 3 of the newbies. He has never acted this way before towards any of the other fish in the tank, and I'm not quite sure what to think of his behavior. I put him in time out in the breeding net, and took him out the next day, and as soon as he was let out he went right after the other one again! I don't understand why he's acting like this since he's never been like this before. Any suggestions?

| - Time out can work with livebearers, but obviously it hasn't for you.
- When there's signs of aggressions since putting new fish in, I tend to sit it out for a week, to see how it develops. It could be that they're just re-asserting their dominance. But that's only possible if it's moderate aggression.
- What's the ratio of male/females in the tank, for guppie and platys? I wonder if giving the aggressive male more females would work.

| No female guppies... I don't think any female platys. This happened with 2 mollies I had, the black one totally harrassed the marble one until it died. I don't want that to happen with these fish.

| What tank size and how many fish total are in the tank?
What type of decorations, hiding spots, plants live or fake, etc do you have in the tank?
What is the tank's temperature? |

| What tank size and how many fish total are in the tank?
I have a 55 gal. tank w/ 15 fish in total in the tank.
What type of decorations, hiding spots, plants live or fake, etc do you have in the tank?
There are mostly fake plants, I know one of the fake ones is a java fern, 2 live plants that haven't been eaten yet, one rock wall ornament, and 2 rock caves.
What is the tank's temperature?
The temp is at 78 degrees right now.
what colors are the guppy and the platy being targeted?
The guppy is silvery with an red-orange and black tail, the 1st one he targeted was sunset colored yellow to light orange.
I think the problem stemmed from with what armadillo was saying about re-asserting his dominance. I took him out of time out yesterday, and he did go after not only the sunset colored platy, but the yellow and black one as well. Funny enough, he leaves the orange ones alone.
Thank you for your help!

| i've noticed that in the divided tank that has guppies and platys in it, the same type of behavior.. the one guppy that keeps slipping over to the platy side when he gets a chance always goes after the same platy.. i think guppies are more aggressive than platys and he is asserting himself as other posts have suggested. |

| Guppy going after platy I have a similar situation with aggressive guppies as well. I have 2 fairly new tanks that I'm still cycling. I started out with 2 male guppies and 1 female platy in one tank. A few days ago, I got a male platy and that was also when I split them up into two different tanks. Since I don't want the platys to breed just yet, I have 1 platy in each tank. The guppies are also split up to even the load. Both male guppies are going after the platys in their perspective tanks. I switched the guppies around but the same behavior.
One of my tanks is 6.6 gallon with a heater which keeps the temperature around 77. I have in there a female orange sunset wag platy and a male red/orange guppy. The other one is 10 gallon with no heater with a male blue mickey mouse platy and a yellow male guppy. The house is kept between 65 and 70.
I have hiding spots and plants (live and fake) in both tanks. None of them seem to care too much about any of them. The guppies are just constantly bothering the platys.
Should I keep both guppies in the same tank to curtail this aggressive behavior? Last edited by miraloma; November 20th, 2007 at 01:49 PM.

| they really need to be kept in a group of at least 3. When there are just 2, you get a pecking order that has one picking on the other. |

we had a guppy that chased a male red wag and the wag would get ticked off and flare all his fins out to provehe was male, but that little gup was a persistant little lol |
