New Pair of Male/Female Pearl Gouramis

These guys are new to the tank. They are maybe 2 and a half inches. At least, I am HOPING they are indeed a male and female. One is more subdued in coloration that the other, and the fin is maybe slightly more rounded but I think they are not quite adult enough to tell. They dont seem to mind being very close to one another though.

Anyway, they are keeping to the corners and the shadows right now which I read was normal, but a minute or so ago one was swimming around so violently that it actually hti the walls of the tank a few times. I have seen none of the other fish mess with them at all, although the danios are ultra active and all over the place and I wonder if it bothers them.

Should I be worried?

Congratz on your new babies. Maybe the one got spooked since they are in a new home and/or your water parameters are off. Are those the water readings as of now in your aquarium info? If so, I would of waited until the tank was fully cycled and steady before adding them.

they havent done it since, although they are still shy. The female hangs out at the bottom front in a nice spot, and the male hides in the back corner.

Can someone who owns these comment on their feeding habits? When I fed the tank this morning they didnt even seem to make an effort to get to the food. Some drifted down to where they were at but they still didnt seem to pay attention to it. Food was a shrimp based flake food. I have seen them nibble at some algae once in a while but thats it.

Does this sound typical? Im worried they arent getting enough food.

I feed mine by putting the food in the outflow of water so it gets distributed throughout the tank. I have dwarf neon rainbows (instead of danios) which have somewhat similar eating habits, so they dominate the food supply when I sprinkle it on top. I've found them to be happy swimming around eating morsels that are floating around - seems they have a better opportunity to eat this way. They are dainty eaters though, with small mouths (for gouramis), so you are right to want to keep an eye on them to make sure they are getting enough food.

If the fish are new, they need to adjust. Fish don't eat when they are stressed, so if they aren't eating after a few days, then I'd be worried.

Do you think it would be beneficial to replace the danios in the tank with a less active schooling fish? Maybe small tetras?

I just noticed you have a 20 gallon. When the pearls get bigger they are going to need more room, like a 29. Yeah, in a smaller tank like that it would be better to swap out the danios for some small tetras.

The males dorsal fin is twice as long as the females.

Try feeding them frozen bloodworms, fish go nuts over those! My DG loves them, doesn't care for brine shrimp for some reason. lol
