| once i am done picking out and acclimating plants to my 29 gallon tank, i want to add a gourami. i really enjoy my dwarf gourami that i have in my ten gallon, and would really like to have another species of these beautiful fish. i already have a small school of cherry barbs living in there. i was wondering if i could get some suggestions. i would really like a pearl or three-spot, as they have both readily at the local petco. thanks!
i just don't want a species that will stress my cherry barbs. I have seen mixed reviews on the agressiveness of the different species of guaramis. I know that my dwarf gaurami is somewhat territorial and has his aggressive streaks! i am just looking for some experienced feedback before i just buy one. i have gotten alot of great information from everyone here in the past couple of months and this is where i come to find answers to my all my aquarium questions. Fishlore is awesome! Last edited by aquarist48; September 23rd, 2009 at 05:08 AM.

| I really enjoy my pearl gourami if that helps with your decision at all. She's beautiful and gets along great with other members of the tropical community. |

| there are various colors of dwarf gouramis out there that are beautiful... honey gourami, the cobalt or the chocolate, the pear. I have dwarf gouramis and enjoy them, i also have the gold and blue 3 spot gouramis while gorgeous, they are very territorial |

| Cherry barbs are no pushovers, so I don't think you'll have a problem with the gourami being too aggressive. I don't really think it matters which kind you get, so long as it's not a kissing or giant. Get one that'll look good with the cherry barbs. |

| thanks for everyones input! i have already made a stocking error that resulted in a casualty since then i don't take any advice from the petco people(the only fish store in the area besides wal-mart). I have my choices narrowed down to either a pearl gaurami or possibly kribs. |

Although I had to separate my blue gourami from my lavender gourami for a while because he was chasing them all around when I first got them. Although now they are in the big fish tank in fish heaven I miss them so much so I buried them in my back yard in the garden
I might get another lavender gourami again later on, although I was going to be thinking of getting a south american leaf fish when I can move my fire mouth cichlid and severum to my other tank Although it is going to be hard to move my fire mouth he hides EVERYWHERE in my planted tank. |

| If you want a leaf fish your best bet is a leopard bushfish. The SA leaf is very difficult to keep and requires live food.
Ah, and that's not off topic with the thread. The leopard bushfish is in the anabantoid family. That's a really cool "gourami" that most overlook or don't know about. Last edited by Jaysee; October 2nd, 2009 at 01:18 AM.

| The bushfish grows to 6 inches and will readily eat flake and pellets, as well as frozen foods. |

| there are some beautiful blue three-spots at petco, and they are only a dollar! i am just scared about territorial issues that they may have. if they are half as territorial and bull headed as my dwarf, then that is not what i am looking for! he can be a real jerk sometimes. that is why he is with danios, he can't catch them because they are lightning-fast! the cory and otto that are in the tank with him have just learned to keep their distance. he is fun to watch though, and is a very attractive fish. |

| I think it boils down to the individual fish, and more importantly how the tank is set up. I have read that lots of hiding places and plants will make a gourami feel more at ease, so I have followed that as well as I can.
Do you have adequate hiding places for your dwarf? If so, you may just have an aggressive specimen, or your dwarf may be responding to perceived aggression from the danios (e.g. giant danios can be terrible bullies in a community tank).
I have a dwarf and a blue in our community tank, with no problems. Sex will probably make a difference too.
I think the flame dwarf is beautiful: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/p...87&pcatid=2687
The honey gourami (Colisa chuna) is a very peaceful fish. You can add several to your community tank without problems. |

| my dwraf has plenty of hiding places and his tank is heavily planted. i think that he knows that he is king of the castle and just has an aggressive personality. he wants all of the hiding places to be his! the danios don't pay any attention to him, they are too busy chasing each other around (24 hours a day!) i am sure that every fish is different though and i shouldn't judge all gauramis off of him |

| they are very energetic and add alot of livelyness to the tank. i don't think that they ever stop moving! danios are alot of fun to watch. i recommend everyone have danios at some point in their fishkeeping years. they seem to work great as dither fish also, they kind of relieve any stress or shyness that may be present in the tank. |

However, their voracious feeding habbits can easily intimidate more timid fish and discourage pickier eaters from feeding. For the most part, though, they are good dither fish. For those shy, picky eaters, I would recomend cherry barbs or gold barbs (bigger than the cherry) - they are out and about, loosly schooling fish, but are not maniacal in their behavior. |

| that is true, jaysee, i never really thought of it like that. i haven't ever had to deal with a situation with picky eaters. my danios are crazy eaters. it seems like they like to play while they eat and they cover every single inch of the tank while doing so. maniacal is a great description of my danios! my cherry barbs are much more laid back and would make better dither fish for finicky eaters and the more timid fish. great observation |
