Gouramis and an African Dwarf frog

Just got the fish and the frog after cycling my tank? I'm new to fish (all i've had before were fancy goldfish) and I'm just wondering if you have any tips specific to Guaramis or the African Dwarf Frog? Thanks so much!

Hi Welcome to the forum
I don't know about Gourami's but I know a little about ADF's
What size tank is he in? If it's the 5g, I'm not sure there's room for both.
They do best when their tanks are between 12-18".
Although they're fully aquatic they need to get to the top to breath air. If the tank is too tall they could tire out before getting to the top.
ADF's are slow to find food so if he's with other fish you'll have to make sure he's eating. This might mean hand feeding him with a turkey baster or very dull tweezers.
They're escape artists. Make sure there are any little openings he can squeeze out of.
The eat Frog and Tadpole bites, thawed frozen blood worms and brine shrimp.
Feed just until their belly looks full.
Over feeding can cause bloating.
Avoid freeze dried food and flakes for the same reason.
They like the temp to be between 76-80F
Avoid using small gravel that can fit in their mouth.
Don't put them with large fish or they might get eaten or too small fish as the fish might get eaten.

I love the little guys, they're so much fun! If you click on the link in my sig I think I have pics of mine there.

Hope that helped.
Good luck.

I wouldn't suggest putting a gourami in a tank that small. There isn't any room for it.

African Dwarf Frog Out of Water

My African Dwarf frog is climbling up the wire of the heater and nestling itself between the wire and the side of the tank above the water! Is this bad for the frog to be out of the water? I have gotten him back into the water but he continues to climb out. I need help as to whether this is something I need to try to prevent or not. Thanks so much.

Your ADF is fully aquatic and will dry out quickly if he escapes from your tank.
Do you have a lid on your tank? He can get out od the tiniest openings.
Is the tank cycled?
What are your readings for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates?
If your water parameters are not in check, he may try to escape.

Hanging on the top too much can also be a sign of illness.

I've merged all your threads since they're all asking about help with your ADF.

He's probably getting used to his new home.

It would the members help you if you would please answer the questions that were asked.

What are you feeding him?

I do not know the acidity of the tank. I'm working on figuring out how to do that. I am going to get pH strips but my question is- if it is too acetic or not acetic enough what do i do to change it?

Also, i am feeding him HBH frog and tadpole bites- recommended by my local (big chain- i hate shopping there) fish store

The important readings at this point would be ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. It's important to know if your tank is cycled or not.

The liquid tests are much more accurate than the strips and less costly in the long run.
Please read this link about the nitrogen cycle:
http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm

I feed mine the HBH frog and tadpole bites too but only a couple times a week. One of the didn't like them at first. Their main diet is thawed frozen blood worms. They really love them and will stand on their tippy fins waiting for them to fall. Super cute!
Read my post above about what foods to avoid.
I put a little ceramic food dish in the tank so I could see if they were eating or not. They like to forage for their food so he might be eating and you just don't know it.
Be sure to remove any uneaten food or it will foul up the water.
I'm pretty sure my first post to you should answer most of your questions.

It's not unusual for them to hide a little. I have 2 in a 5g mini bow and sometimes I can't even find them in there!

Give him some time to get used to the tank and make sure there's places he can go hide to feel safe.

Good luck with your little frogger, I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

Is there something wrong?

My African Dwarf Frog is hanging at the top of the tank basically floating under a part of the water filter. He is not moving much but it appears that he is hiding (this may not be true). Is there something wrong? I have lots of vegetation and a few cave like things for him to hide in. Why is he staying at the top?

Thanks!

Hi - I moved your thread out of the forum issues area and merged it with this one since they are similar. Please try to post in the most appropriate board.
Thanks,
Mike

Thanks for moving it Mike.

pestonoodle, In another thread you mention that you have 2 Dwarf Gouramis in the tank and that it's 8g's
Your tank isn't big enough for the fish/frog you have.

I am planning to try to get a new tank but it's a little pricey. Any reccommendations on where to find a good tank/ how to get the cycle started quickly so that I can get these fish switched to a bigger tank.

Craig's List or Kijiji are good places to find bargains on tanks. You can also sign up for freecycle.org in your area.

There are a couple of ways to quickly cycle a tank. If you know someone with an established tank ask if you can borrow a handful of their gravel or better yet, cut a a peice of their used filter media and add that to your tank.
Several members have had luck using Tetra SafeStart. Be very wary of any other product that claim to cycle your tank. They usually contain the wrong kind of bacteria.
