Dwarf gouramis and shrimp

I was just wondering if putting a dwarf gourami in my 10 gallon tank would be a good idea since I'm planing on keeping the amano shrimp in there and getting some more. I'm planning on removing my cories and neons from the tank, so I am looking for a peaceful fish that won't eat my amano shrimp! thanks!

I think I remember reading on the forum somewhere that they would eat shrimp, but I'm not sure, so wait for someone else to come along.

A Dwarf Gourami would no doubt eat the eggs and baby shrimp as will just about any fish who can fit the eggs in their mouths.

Dense clumps of Java moss may offer some protection.

Well, I'm not trying to breed them... I was just wondering if a DG would go after a full grown amano shrimp. Thanks though!

Yes, a dwarf guorami will likely try to make a full-grown amano shrimp into lunch, but will fail, except for when the shrimp is molting. If you present plenty of hiding places (a piece of driftwood draped with Java moss is best), the shrimp will simply disappear during its molting phase, then come back out when it has a nice protective shell again.

Tahnks sirdarksol, Do you have any other suggestions as what fish I should put in there when I move all my other ones.

The dwarf guorami would be an okay one, as long as you include hiding places for the shrimp.

Otherwise, all I can think of are other small fish, like what you are removing from the tank. This is mostly because of the limits of a 10g tank, not because of the Amano shrimp.

One thing that I just thought of is that you might not see your Amano shrimp if you get a fish as big as a dwarf gourami or bigger. When I had my Amano shrimp in a tank with a goldfish and a koi, they stayed hidden under a log almost all the time. I actually thought they were dead for over a year, and only found them alive when I was switching some aquarium equipment around.

Honey and chocolate are smaller gouramis also. They might have a bit more difficult trying to sqeeze the shrimp into their mouths!

Chocolate Gourami's aren't as hardy as the other gourami's. They are just like discus they need almost perfect water. Good Luck!
