Aggresive Gourami

We recently bought two blue dwarf gouramis, one male and one female for our 10 gallon tank that only has two other cory cats in it right now. They have both been in the tank for about four days and the male has started chasing the female, especially at night. Would getting another female solve this? Also, what other fish could anyone suggest that would go well in this tank? We originally had another betta in the tank who he hadn't been aggressive towards yet but she ate the gourami's food and got extremely fat so she is in the quarantine tank temporarily (and doing much better!).

gourami's are very territorial and 10 gal is too small for 2.....I would either get a bigger tank, 20 gals at least, or return the 2 and get some more pieceful fish..goodluck

Also bettas and guramis are natural enemies... bettas do better in their own 2.5-5 gallon tank.

Our betta will be getting her own tank as soon as we get one, she's just in the quarantine tank temporarily since we haven't gotten it yet.

You shouldn't have a m/f gourami in a 10 gallon tank, unless you have another tank set up for breeding and know how to go about it.

A female who is not ready for breeding may very well be severely beaten up or killed by a male in breeding condition. Your poor female is frightened and has no way of escaping.

I would keep just the one male in that tank.

Also, are you sure it is female? most stores only sell males, since they are usually more colorful, but they get aggressive with each other...

We're fairly certain it's a female. The male is thinner and has much more red on his back fin. The female has a much larger belly and is almost completely blue.

Hmm, the tank is a bit too small. I recommend 20 gallon minimum and max is more than 1,000 gallons I guess.

I have gouramis 3 males and 1 female in my 29 gallon tank, with my other fishes and they seem to work out fine.

My 500 gallon has an abundance of different types of Tetras, Angels, and gouramis

So I suggest you get a bigger tank and move your gouramis into the bigger tank, because you don't want to have a lot of stress build up.

Also, they are from India (Hindu stan) and they live in very very warm waters.

They live in rivers, lakes, and sometimes streams.

I had a male and female gourami and the female is most certainly not meant to be blue it is meant to be a yellowy clour and most stores dont have them seeing as they are not as good looking as the males. Mine got along fine and actually built a bubble nest in my breeding tank(Sold now) and they laid eggs but before i realised all the babies were gone because i forgot to remove the female and male. I am so stupid. Hope yours get along.
