Gourami adventure.

Well, we owned 2 gold gourami's for about a total of... an hour! My hubby has been wanting to put some in his tank so we picked some up today, and even looking at them in the store he was a little iffy because one of them looked red near the tail. Not like it was bleeding, but just unusual. So, we get them run through KFC drive-thru and get home. We snip a teeny hole in the bag and put it in the tank to start acclimating. Within 10 minutes one starts acting strange.... floating vertically, swimming oddly, etc. So, I quickly return them to the store and get a refund. Neither of us wanted to risk keeping either of them or getting more and risking some kind of disease or bacteria running rampant through our tank. Soooo if anyone knows anyone who has a couple for sale....

On an off note... I used the refund towards an api test kit and figured out how to do all the reading. Happy to say it was 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, and around 20 nitrates. Go me!

Whew, that was close, good thing you caught it before adding it to your tank.

It's a good reminder of the importance of quarantining any new inhabitants to your tank.

Gourami are really susceptible to ammonia poisoning, and this often shows up as red splotches on the body (capillaries are bursting from the poisoning). They may have been suffering it even before leaving the store.

So, when we went back to the pet store last night my hubby was looking at the gourami's to see if they had gotten anymore in. (Tuesday is the day they are supposed to get their fish in.) But, apparantly they hadn't gotten anymore fish in as half the tanks were still pretty empty. But, when we looked at the gourami's (they have blue and gold in the same tank). The gold one's had red eyes. So, I looked up a link to them http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_tricho2.php and this being the first one I looked at, the eyes are no where even close to red. They look like the blue ones in the tank. But the red on the gold was very pronounced almost like there was bleeding in the eyes. When I pointed it out to my hubby he said it must be normal as the blue ones don't look like that. Looking at that picture, I don't think it is. What would cause that to happen to the gold ones and not the blue ones though? I think they have all been there about the same length of time.
