I have a 20g with three gouramis - a normal dwarf, a blue dwarf, and a sunset dwarf. The regular dwarf is the largest with the sunset only slightly smaller, and the blue about half the size. The tank also has a few neons. I added a couple of red tuxedo guppies that my sister had, and the normal dwarf just went crazy. He not only attacked and killed both guppies, he attacked and killed the sunset, two of the neons, and injured the blue dwarf.

In hindsight I can see that overstocking and territoriality might have made him attack the guppies, but why would he go after other fish that he'd been living with peacefully for months?

maybe they had already staked their territory and tolirated each other then by adding the guppies trespassed on his part of the tank and decided the tanks his...who knows a fish to far maybe.

they can be very territorial as you have witnessed sorry for the loss of your fish..next time id suggest removing the agressor, add your new fish, and rearrange the decorations a bit, then readd mr nawty gourami..but as you said, overstocking can cause major stress also...
