I'm not expert on plants, but I do think dwarf gouramies would be fine in your tank. Just make sure you don't end up with two males, because often they'll fight a lot especially if you don't have enough hiding places and space for them. Other types of gouramies I like include the honey gourami and the pearl gourami. Good luck!

For most gouramis, the only way you can sex them is by the dorsal fins -- the males usually have a pointy end towards the back, while the females have a more rounded dorsal fin. In a few species, the females are duller in coloring, too.

Unfortunately, there are some (like my honey dwarf gouramis) where it's only possible to sex them while they're in breeding condition -- the male gets a darker band on the bottom and his colors intensify. Otherwise, males and females are identical, so it's a shoot (I think I have 2 males, based on their squabbling).

a pair of dwarves would be best in tank this size and after adding them i wouldnt add anything else. sexing gourami based on dorsal fins is very hard. with dwarves the males have brighter colouring while the females are generally duller - simply coral blue or sometimes grey.
