Fishless Cycling

I have read where you can put drops of ammonia in a fishless tank to help with the cycling of tank. I've read the type of ammonia to get is called ammonium hydroxide. Is this true and where can I purchase this ammonia. Thanks again, High201

Re: Fishless Cycling

Yes I believe thats it Here is an article that explains the difference in ammonium chloride and ammonium hydroxide. http://badmanstropicalfish.com/articles/article14.html
Although whats commonly used for cycling a tank is plain old ammonia without any additives.

Re: Fishless Cycling

Where do you get ammonia? I asked my LFS and they looked at me like I was mad. They didnt' even know that you could use it for fishless cycling. Very well informed, as usual... Do you get it from a normal hardware store?

Re: Fishless Cycling

Can usually get it at the grocery or hardware store. But you have to make sure it is pure ammonia with out sudsing or perfume agents.

Re: Fishless Cycling

Thank you, Carol. I have the language barrier to deal with too (my Dutch is hopeless), so I hope I don't come home with 200L of eau de cologne!

Yeah, I can imagine my fish would not be impressed by the whole perfume idea.
