Hello Tiny and Welcome to Fish Lore. So sorry to hear about your fish loss and ICH issues.

The salt bath scares me to no end. Personally I don't think I would try that again. I don't feel like you're giving the warmer temperatures a chance to do what they need to do. In a lot of cases, ICH will look much worse before it starts to get better. If you feel that there is more going on than just ICH then maybe the salt bath was necessary. ICH is also caused by stress along with sudden changes in water temperatures.

The ICH medication that you used, did it say to remove the carbon from your filter first?

As for Pleco's, they are tropical and should not be mixed with Gold Fish as they are cooler water fish. Sorry you lost yours. You are correct, he could have been ill when you purchased him.

Please keep us posted.
Best wishes,
Ken

The salt baths do help with goldies. It makes the fish produce a thicker slime coating, helping to protect against reinfection of ich.

Ich can be present in your water supply too. Personally i would be storing pre-treated water to use for water changes until poor Harry has had a chance to recover.

Harry is starting to look better! He still looks pretty sick and his eyes are kind of bulging, but I think the ich or whatever it may be is improving. He was more active this morning and he ate a few fish flakes. The edges of his fin rot don't look so furry, as though they are starting to heal. I'm starting to have some hope that he might pull through!

Great news!
Harry has made nearly a full recovery. His ich is nearly gone and his tail is actually starting to grow back. He's eating and swimming around like a trooper!

Assuming he continues to do well, I'd like to get him a friend in a week or two. He's always had his buddy, Tiny, with him. Tiny died of the same malady that befell Harry. I have a 20 gallon tank, and I know now that 2 goldies are too many for that size. Buying a larger tank is not in the budget. Are there any fish that do well with goldies and might provide Harry with some company?

Also, if I do buy another I can get a small tank to QT the new fish in, but how long do I need to leave it there? I already have an extra filter. The new tank wouldn't be cycled, though. So do I need to do the long process of cycling a tank and then get the new fish and then quarantine and then finally Harry can have a friend? Seems like a long time. If there's an easier way to go about this, let me know.

Thanks!

Yeah! Glad Harry is making a recovery!!!! as for tankmates, you could get cory´s although some might disagree, they do well in temperate water

you could add your extra filter to the current tank and run it for a good 2 weeks to get some bacteria in it untill you get your other tank, that way you shoud have an instant cycle. OR you could get tetra safestart and add the fish at the same time. I would et around 3-5 corys as some say they like company

I would say hold off on a fish buddy until you can get them in a larger tank. Aim for a 55 gallon then you could have three of the fancy goldies in it. In the meantime, Harry would be okay alone. You might even be able to teach him some tricks.
