It's been one thing after another with My Bubble Eye goldfish(I guess that is why there not recommended for the beginner Anyway first off and I should have known better my tank was not cycled...second my Icky popped one of his eye sacks and now they're both floating around with clamped fins and hanging near the surface...and they're covered with what I think is fungus at first I thought it was ICH...but after closer inspection it does not look like salt but more like patches of white almost fuzzy stuff
I am currently changing 75% of the water daily and adding freshwater aquarium salt (High Nitrites)am at 3% right now...Does any one have any other suggestions? Here's a video(not the best quality)
aww shell ..im sorry ..your fish babies are so darn cute!!!!!!
I will give you my suggestions
stop using the salt.although it helps with nitrites, most of our fish we get now a days, havent ever been exposed to it and arent used to it.....its more of old school and an irritant and just makes them overproduce slime coat (some will disagree and live by it tho) and get some prime or amquel+ ...either one of them will detox the nitrites/ammonia for 24 hours until another water change(which I would drop to 50% max) ...once it is cycled, im sure they will do much better!!! ... I so hope they perk up although their eating isnt lacking is it..I just love that tank setup ! good luck with them!!!!!

Thanks Shawnie,
I do use Prime with every water change and I was curious about the large water changes,(originally I was doing small, but frequent) but I have been going on a goldfish forum (not to many peeps here into goldfish and they all recommend it? anyway I will hold off with the salt as I have also heard it will do more harm than good,by making them produce to much slime and maybe that's the problem... as I have never seen what I am seeing, doesn't really look like fungus to me but not like Ich eitherMy Nitrites are dropping so maybe in a few days things will start looking better Just very frustrating atm And they are still eating well as you see (LOL)Just had there Pea's tonight
I dont want to disregard what others say by any means..we all have our own way..but my goldies didnt do well with salt what so ever...and if its the ammonia/nitrites that are the issue at the moment, the prime will take care of that...although there are allot of fish keepers that use salt, im out of the old ways as the overproduction of slime coat leads me to believe the fish are working their bodies at something that isnt needed ...and the conditioners are more up to date then they were years ago ...again, I love that tank and I really hope those cutie pies get better! their faces are to die for!
Thanks Shawnie
I am very happy with the bare bottom look I just need to find some good soft plants,
My Bubble Eye'd Buddies are still eating and pooping, but otherwise hanging near the surface with clamped fins still this morning,my 30 gallon goldfish are doing very well, with out salt and with 1/3 water change every other day...I'm thinking if it has worked for them maybe I am doing to much in the 20 gallon?I have never been steered wrong on this site,I just wish there were a few more gf lovers to compare notes with (LOL)
Thanks as always for being there for me
I hope other members come along for you shell!!!!!! in all the years i kept my goldies, i never used salt and it was recommended back then (14 years or so ago) and mine did awesome without it...just remember salt doesnt dissolve or disapait so every time you add it, you are adding it on top of what is already in there ...do you have a salinity tester to see where your salt readings are? big hugs and great job not giving up!!!!

Shawnie do you still have GF?I'm going to forget the salt and start treating this tank as I do my 30 and see if things improve (fingers crossed)I'm getting my salt tester thing(I think its called a hydrometer)this am But not going to add it any more!!!
You know I can't give up on a fish...they're my babies Can't say the same about missing all the w/c's with 10 tanks though (LOL)Though I do miss my betta babies
Hi Shell, I have goldfish too ! I'm usually here but have been busy the last week and somehow missed this thread till now.
I agree with Shawnie, I don't recommend salt, and have never used it in my goldie tanks. Keep doing the large water changes, maybe a 25 or 30 percent change in the morning, and another 25percent change at night, and continue with the Prime.
The bubble sac will most probably grow back, although it may not match the size and/or shape of the orignial or the other sac. (there's also a possiblity that it may not grow back; not to worry either way!) The main concern is to keep the water absolutely pristine, so that no infection develops in the sac that popped.
good luck Shell, keep us posted on Ickys progress.
Hello ShellBell. I hate to hear about your Bubble Eye problems. Great info above about "not" using salt. I had Bubble Eyes years ago and I'm sad to say that once their eyes popped, they went down hill from there. I wish I had better news and suggestions for you. Doing your water changes and keeping the water pristine is my best advice.
Best wishes for a full recovery!
Ken
Thanks Joy and Ken,
I have moved half my filter media from my cycled 30 gallon over to my 20 gallon in hope to help that cycle along,I have also stopped using the salt but continuing the daily 50% water change's I have also started the Bubble eyes on rid fungus in hopes to clear that up...I do have a question,I used to use garlic guard along with prime when I had my Betta's would the garlic guard be of benefit for the GoldfishI still use prime

hi shell! no i dont have my goldies anymore as all my tanks are tropicals but for 8 years, they kept me alive and gave me much pleasure ...
I think with the prestine water and daily changes, once the tank is cycled , the baby boy should perk up much more.....although im worried about the medication now as that may kill what bacteria you have got going ...meds arent always a benefit ....garlic guard will help him to build up his immune system and entice him to eat more so yes id definitely use it!! im glad you decided to stop the salt....also keep an eye on your 30 gal as you dont want to throw that in a mini cycle as goldies are big waste producers and removing half their bacteria might do so....I wish i was there to help you with changes!!!!!!! i know how nerve wracking it can be...goodluck my friend!
regarding your 30 gallon, you may want to reduce feedings in that tank for the next week, just to be on the safe side ( as not to throw it into a mini cycle.)
My sister uses salt in her pond, but I don't. I only use salt as a dip if I have a fish that looks a bit down in the dumps or has parasites or fungus. The fancy goldies don't seem to do as well with salt as the common or comet goldies do. I would say keeping the water as clean as possible and maybe reducing the amount of food may be the best thing to do. I would be a bit leary about any medications until the tank is cycled. Then you may want to consider a fungus cure or even melafix. Melafix seems to be a fairly good all around medication for the goldies.
