Unhappy feeding accident

Ok yesterday a little cousin thought he would sneak and feed my goldfish. Its a tiny maybe 1 1/2 inch fish in a 10 gal tank. So I caught him dumping the bag of sinking shrimp pellets into the tank. About 30 or so pellets made it into the tank. I dug around trying to remove them with a net. I got out as many as I could. List night I did about a 40-50% water change. Needless to say my goldfish looks stuffed, not sure how much he ate. I am thinking I should not feed him for a bit and my question is how long before I should feed him again. I dont normally give those pellets to him as they are for the other tank.

Thanks much

give him about 2-3 days of fasting...then feed him a piece of thawed frozen pea about the size of his eye for 2-3 days...keep doing daily water changes as that tank is small for him on a regular diet..with over feeding, you will have left over food and poo like you wouldnt believe....good luck!
ps...we all learn the hard way that when little ones are around, fish food belongs locked up! been there with my granddaughter

I never even considered locking up the fish food as I dont have any small children. Who would have thought his mother would leave him unattended in the house. A lesson well learned for me, I will move the fish food out of little hands reach.

Thanks much

Oh no! I hope your fish is going to be alright. Great advice from Shawnie.

My nerves go on edge when people bring their little children into my house. (remember I'm not a parent) It's not child proof by any means. Not to mention my fish tank. Finger prints! Everywhere! I'm always polite (of course) and I try to explain about banging on the glass etc. "keep your grubby little hands off my tank! LOL (just kidding, kinda)

I admire you folks that can handle it and deal with it on a daily basis. I couldn't do it. This is where Chef would tell me to take a pill.
LOL

I feel the same way as my house is definitely not child proof, my son is 22. I had a cookout yesterday and who would have thought that some cousins would leave their children in the house unattended while I was on the grill. It took me half of the night between digging out the pellets, changing the water and cleaning the outside of both tanks from nasty hand prints...............

It wont happen again. Hopefully the goldfish although happy at the moment will be ok.

Keep up with the water changes, and skip food for a couple of days. Your little goldie will be just fine. I would suggest changing water twice a day, that way you can get rid of the maximum amount of ammonia with the least stress to the fishie.

I don't have any kids, but my Mom had 9 (I'm #8). So there are lots of nieces and nephews and grand nieces and grand nephews that come and want to play with Aunt Gremlin's toys and fish and birdies and doggie and "we have to feed the fishies cuz they are hungry". And of course the "I want to pick this flower cuz it is sooo pretty" as they pull up the entire plant... and then there is the ball and frisbee and other assorted toys that wind up in the garden, in the pond, on top of the bird cage, inside toys outside, dirty outside toys inside on the carpet. Yes, children can be a pain. Then they go home.
