my first rescue

hi, today i went to my friends house and he has a snapping turtle. my friend decided to buy his turtle some feeder goldfish. immediatly i felt horrible for these fish. i just so happened to have five dollars in my pocket. and what do i do? i buy the fish that was about to be eaten and one other that was also going to be eaten. i called my mom and she took me and the two gold fish home. i put them in my unocupied hospital tank and they seem much happier. i fed them some flakes and they ate them and are swimming happily around the tank. im so happy that i saved these fish.

Congratulations on the rescue! What size tank are you putting these lucky fish in?

Eeeks, from what I've been told by our goldfish experts, they need 20 gallon for the first goldfish and 10 gallons for each additional goldfish. I'm sure gremlin or one of the others will see this post soon and can provide you with the information you're seeking.

Good for you for rescuing them. Now, all you have to do is provide them with a big enough house

you could go to your LFS and ask them in anyone has a pond. Contact the person and see if he will take them in for you..

Northeast like NY, NH, CT, MD, MA? We have a few members here that live in that area.

Why don't you post in the Sell section of the forum and specify where you are? That should give you some good responses.

Good luck and please keep us posted!

Update:

alright so yesterday i woke up and found one of the goldfish dead thought it was no surprise because this one was swimming just a tad sideways so i could tell it was unhealty. i did find a home for the other goldfish at one of the body shops my dad takes claims at (he works at geico). late afternoon yesterday we dropped him off at his new home, a 55 gallon tank with two other (much bigger) goldfish and plenty of places to hide. my dad texted me this morning and said the goldfish is doing fine.

how is that for a first fish rescue?

I'm glad you were able to rescue them. Turtles can eat processed food pellets and don't really need to hunt fish. It is actually safer (health wise) to feed them a prepared diet than to buy feeder goldfish that (a lot of the time) are unhealthy. The one that died may have been sick or injured. "Feeder" fish are usually considered throw away fish and really are not properly cared for by either the breeders or the stores that sell them.

Feeder goldfish can grow up to 10 inches or more if properly cared for. All of my goldfish started out as feeder fish. Because they are active swimmers, and because of the amount of waste they produce, they really need at least a 30 gallon for one and 40 - 55 gallon for 2-3. Anymore than that, and you should have them in a pond. Once they reach 4-5 inches, they really should be in a pond so they have the room to swim. If you ever wonder if a tank will be big enough for a goldfish, float a ruler in the tank for each goldfish you want in there. If the rulers bump into each other or the walls, it is not big enough.

Congratulations on saving the goldies and finding an appropriate home for the survivor.
