| | Fish Keeper | My goldfish still looks bad! I don't know what's wrong with him, but his pinecone-ing looks like it's getting worse. The strange thing is that he's not bloated at all and he still eats! What could be wrong?
P.S. Any white spots you see are from the camera flash, etc., and not ICH. |

| | Fish Keeper | Here's a somewhat bad quality side view showing that he's not bloated. I took all of these pictures today. Last edited by MaddieLynn; June 15th, 2009 at 03:04 PM.

| | Fish Addict | he looks a bit thin to me, has his weight changed any Maddie? How long have you had him? any idea how old he is? |

|
| | Fish Keeper | I've had him about 10 days. The people I got him from said they had him for a couple years. They didn't feed him regularly which is why he is thin.
I'm feeding him 2 pellets in the morning and 2 at night, with a frozen veggie wafer snack inbetween. |

| | Fish Addict | okay, I just read your other thread, you got the fish from friends who had him in a small tank.
Maddie, check his gills. See if they're red or pink.
Dropsy is symptomatic with kidney failure, and organ failure would cause the gills to pale.
gee, I really hope this isn't whats happening. {{{hugs to you}}}} |

| | Fish Keeper | I don't need to check - they are red. Pretty bright red too. But you can only see the red when he opens them, not all the time.
I just gave him his afternoon veggie snack and he was soooo excited! He's so tame too! I feed him right out of my hand (fingers actually) all the time, and I could probably pick him up if I wanted to. |

| | Fish Addict | okay that is good news. Not sure why he's pineconing, with no bloat. There's an underlying cause but it could be any number of things.
But since your friend had him in a too small tank and didn't feed enough, I wonder if the tank had bad water quality as well, which is making me lean to a bacterial cause.
Perhaps they didn't know to do water changes and vacuum. If so, those years of bad water quality have taken a toll on your poor moor.
Without knowing if its bacterial or parasitic, or even viral, and since he's still eating, I'd begin feeding him some anti-bacterial medicated food. Jungle has a good medi food available at most chain stores. |

|
| | Fish Addict | also, give as much medicated food as he'll take (within reason, of course! ) I have a feeling he's hungry. He's at least 2years old that we know of, so he can eat more than 4 pellets and a wafer a day.
good luck Maddie. Hope he pulls through! |

| | Fish Addict | how's he doing Maddie? |

| | Fish Mentor | He does seem awfully thin - see if you can grow some moss on some rocks that you can put in for him to snack on in between feedings. The moss growing on the rock will not 'dirty up' the tank like excess food floating around would, and will be a good source of food that will be always available. |

| | Fish Lore Newbie | Give epsom salt bath. My goldfish survived a similar episode without incident. Good luck! |

| | Fish Keeper | He's worse - he's floating at the top on his side and breathing heavily. His gills are still nocely colored, but he himself is pale, almost a golden color. Does anyone know what's wrong? |
| |

|
| | Fish Mentor | When a goldie loses color like that, it is usually from ammonia poisoning. How red are the gills? Overly red gills is also a sign of something wrong with the water parameters. What are your readings? |
| |

|
| | Fish Keeper | They're not super red, and it's only on the inside, not the gill covers. I'll test the water in a minute. |
