What do you feed your goldfish?

I'm wanting to know what everyone feeds their goldfish so I can get a good idea of what a balanced goldie diet looks like. Post away!

I feed floating pellets - when I feed anything at all. Since mine are in an outdoor pond, they get the "natural diet". They graze on the moss that grows on the sides of the pond - they eat the leaves of the dichondra (grass) that grows over into the pond - they eat the bugs and insects that come for water and fall in (yes, even bees!). Whenever I want to see them, or show them off to a visitor, or just want to enjoy my fishies, I will toss in a handful of pellets and the occasional cube of freeze dried tubifex worms. Some of the goldfish I have had for a while will come and eat the pellets from between my fingers. Most of them will come up and eat the tubifex worms when I hold the cube for them. My mosquito fish really enjoy the tubifex worms. I call them my Pirahna fish when they go after the cube! The goldfish will come up on the rock shelf and swim sideways to get the tubifex worms.

Here is a picture of feeding time with the tubifex - and then feeding time with pellets...

I have orandas and a fantail, and give mine small sinking pellets, peas, lima beans, boston lettuce or softened carrot strips (clipped on the side of tank, they nibble on it, gives them something to do) and I make homemade gel food.

the recipe for the gel food is easy. First blanch any hard veggie. I use kale, broccoli, carrot, cucumber, peas, zucchini, a half a can of no salt/no oil mackerel, tuna or sardine. (I think Shawnie also adds a 500mg vitamin C ? to her gel food) Place veggies and meat in blender, add approx 2cups of bottled water. Blend well. Prepare nonflavored gelatin on stove (I use Knox brand). Then combine the gelatin and veggie mixture in a bowl, mix well, pour into a pan and refrigerate. It'll gel, which makes it easy to cut into small cubes and sink into the tank. The fish seem to like it, and it's highly nutritious.

I give them Hikari Oranda Gold. - http://www.hikari.info/gold/g_04.html
I like it allot because it makes your goldfish grow better. I also give them tubifex worms and chopped peas and lettuce every other week.

I also like the Hikari Oranda gold, even for fish without headgrowth. When I was younger I used to give gel food sometimes, which is just your favorite ingredients blended and held together using unflavored gelatin.

I currently feed thawed frozen peas and hikari brine shrimp with spirulina... I used to feed marineland labs bioblend but they stopped making it I'm still looking for a good quality sinking pellet to replace it.

Hello.

I just posted this about goldfish diet here ( Commonly available fish food is terrible, why? ) if you have a minute to check it out. But it looks like you've already gotten a lot of great suggestions! Gremlin, your pond is beautiful.

I have Saki-Hikari Fancy Goldfish Sinking Pellet Baby Sticks. It's a new line from Hikari with "live (viable) beneficial microorganisms," supposed to help promote a healthy digestive system. Here is a link to one of the online shops: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/6405/product.web

I also have different recipes for gel food if you are interested.

Hmmm... since this food thread is already here I thought I'd ask here. I've got a can of Tetra Pond Sticks (I had bought it in prep for the big goldies I never got) would that be fine if I pick up some little guys once my tank is ready?

It would be fine. You may need to break them up so they are small enough depending on the size of the fish you are getting.

Ok thanks! I'd hate to have to waste all of it.
