Would one goldfish be happy alone? Or do they prefer company?

I have often wondered the same. I don't keep goldies now, but the people that do, say that they seem to do better in pairs or trios, as long as they have the proper living space. (For two would be 30 gals).

Goldfish are social fish and prefer to be in groups. I have three in my pond and they are always swimming right next to eachother. I have never seen them apart.

I think they like to be in groups. Mine will play tag in the pond. They will swim around the sides of the pond and through the lilies - then the leaders will speed up and the ones in the back slow down until the leaders come up behind them. Then they all speed up again.
