Fancy goldfish Q's?

I've heard of some people keeping fancy goldfish in a heated tank. If I had a large enough tank for a fancy goldie, could I keep one with my tropical fish?

Personally, I wouldn't. They do prefer cooler waters with a bit of fluctuation.

I wouldn't mix them either. Fancy goldies are very slow swimmers. Since they are so fat and cute they just kind of bobble along through the tank. If you mix them with tropical fish, they are likely to be harassed by the faster fish and will also have a hard time getting enough food

Hmmm... what exactly to warmer waters do to a goldfish? Does the problem with keeping them in a warmer tank come purely from the oxeygen issue in warmer tanks, or does heated water make goldies more succeptible to ICH?

Also, what if I kept the temp at around 75F instead of about 78F? Would tropical fish be OK at that temp?

I wouldn't mix them. It's just one of those fish that do better in a species tank.
As Kate said, they're generally too slow for a community tankl.
And Comets/Feeders get too large for a standard aquarium.

OK... let's just say that I had an aquarium big enough. Could I keep a comet with my other fish? (I'm looking into getting a large aquarium, like 100 gallons.)

Comets get HUGE. Like a foot long or larger.
I really wouldn't keep that in a community tank.
But in the end it's up to you.

EDIT:
haha, I forget that I have a comet swimming in my bathtub.
He was in a 29 gal. for 2 years & is around 8-9 in. He's a beastie.
He also has a severely damaged mouth because he would constantly swim into the glass. IMO, comets are best left for ponds.

Hmmm... would a comet that large eat other fish?

I ws just speculating... I'm not about to go out and buy one or anything! My main question was about the water temperature. Would a goldfish be OK at 78F, or would my other fish be OK at 75F?

Again, I haven't even seriously looked at a huge aquarium, I was just wondering.

Goldies like a temp. of around 68* F.
They do best at room temp. Keep in mind that these fish can survive in a pond outside in the winter, so they like the cold!
Tropicals really shouldn't be kept in anything lower than 76* F.

Larger goldfish will eat smaller fish. If you get a fancy goldfish, it will be a slower swimmer than the tropical fish and will most likely get picked on and probably have a hard time getting to the food before the others eat it all. Constantly warmer water will make goldies more susceptible to may diseases, not just ich. Their bodies are designed to handle warmer water during the day and cooler water at night. Also, they do best in cooler overall temps. When the water gets too warm in the summer, by goldies all sit at the bottom of the pond where the water is cooler. When we defrost the freezer, I put the chunks of ice in the pond and the goldies swim up right under them. I think they much prefer the cool.

Maddie; As Amanda said it is best not to keep fancey's with tropical's as mine are all oranda's and pearl-scale's, and fan-tails and all are very slow swimmers and they do not compete for food lol and they like a colder temo-ie;room temp-and tropicals like a higher temp. hope this helps you a bit-Ps-each species have their own tank ex; fan-tails in a 40-3-of them and 2-oranda's in a 40-gallon and 3-pearl-scale's in a 20-gallon-babies yet and they are going into a 40-and the others into a 60-gallon. bella
