What kinds of fish can live with Goldfish?

Hi, I recently bought 3 calico fantail gold fish. I always thought that goldfish couldn't live with other kinds of fish (because of the goldfish's slime coating).
But I have read of a few people keeping pleco's with them & I seen a picture of angel fish with goldfish.

I have two other tropical fish tanks, but I want to know-
What 'other fish' can be kept with goldfish?

Thanks

It's really not advisable to keep goldies with tropical fish. Not because of their slime coat but because of the temperature.
Can they live in warmer temps? Sure, but it compromises their health in the long run.
You could try White Cloud minnows, very cute and like the cooler temps that goldies thrive in.

the only other thing you can keep with goldies that i can think of aside from the minnows that lucy mentioned are weather loaches, they thrive better in colder water than in tropical temps

Thanks Akex, I knw there was some kind of loach that prefered cooler water, couldn't remember the name of it.

I love goldies. I think fantails are my favorite. We hope you post some pics soon

Godfish are better in unheated tanks rather than in heated tanks.

i was thinking guppies cause i do it all the time with none dying or getting sick but that might just be luck?

i put guppies in with them when i dont have enough room in tanks etc
apparently they can stand temps to 18 degrees celcius!!!

Because a fish can stand something doesn't mean it's right to keep them that way.
Wrong temperatures cause fish stress, stress weakens their immune system making it harder for them to fight off illness and disease.

Yes, I've seen & heard of many other kinds of fish being kept with Goldfish, but I guess it's either hard on the goldfish (warmer temps) are hard on the other fish.
When I got my goldfish from my local petco & all their tanks filter through one another (except the saltwater tanks of course). So the goldfish were in a heated tank. So I floated them in their bag in my 20gallon heated tank for awhile & then put them in. I've been slowly lowering the tank temp a few degrees today & will continue to do so until I can take the heater out.
Since I already have over the goldfish stocking rule & a bit under the reagular fish rule, I will leave my 3 goldies to themselves.
I would consider adjusting tank temps if I had some kind of issue & needed to combine goldfish & other fish, but for now things will be left as they are. Maybe I'll switch my 75 gallon tank over to a goldfish & minnow tank in 5 years- but for now I'm enjoying my platies, mollies & corys in that tank.

Thanks for the replies & info.

It's not necessary to copy and paste an entire article written by someone else. They may not appreciate their work showing up on another forum.
Just providing the link that pertains to the topic is preferred.

You might find this thread helpful.

i'm not sure how i feel about that particular article actually, just because a fish can "tolerate" temps in the 60s doesn't mean they can thrive in those temps or that that would be best for them. i know for sure that guppies are tropical, as are quite a few of the fish on that list, but i'll have to look into it some more.

It's been my experience over the years that goldies are happier by themselves.

Sorry- I didn't know that whole articles aren't appreciated. It's from About.com so I don't think they'd mind the informaiton being spread.
I was just looking because we were interested in doing a cold water tank in the future.
I've saved articles on all the fish we have, and many kinds- like platies, mollies, swordtails and guppys have a range of Tank Conditions that are suitable for them- alll the fish I listed could tolerate a tank of 70 degrees and that seems to be a temp that's in the range of any goldfish article I read aswell.
I don't mean to offend anyone and I plan on leaving my goldies in their own tank, but I do find many different opinions on whats right for a fish- temperature wise.
Interesting topic anyways.

Unless the author has been asked, we can't be sure.
