missing gill plate

Hi everyone, I was hanging around my friends pet shop when the shipment of fish came in. so we were inspecting all of them and such and I noticed one black Moore with a missing gill plate. we were planning to euthanize him but we really didn't know what to do. my friend wanted to kill him but I figured maybe someone would give him a chance. what do you guys think we should do with this poor guy (the others are picking on him so we moved him into a tank for himself.) please respond!

I have hears stories of fish like that who have lived a decent life... as long as it is ok, can swim and eat properly, and does not seem like it is struggling, I would just let him be.

I agree with Alessa. Unless he's in distress he might be able to live with this disability.

I was in a fish store the other day and there was a fish missing an eye. It was completely healed swimming and acting fine.

Let the poor guy have a chance. He should be able to get along fine. He may not be able to be in a tank with others if they are going to pick on him, but maybe with some other coldwater fish (white mountain minnows maybe?).

You'll need to make sure there is lots of aeration to keep lots of dissolved oxygen in the water.By himself that shouldn't be a problem.Fish breathe by forcing water through their gills, that's why you see them opening and closing.Since he is missing 1 plate, the water isn't concentrated or forced through the gills (on that 1 side)to remove oxygen. So,in effect, his breathing ability is diminished,so the other side has to compensate by working harder.

Usually, keeping a fish with disabilities, can't be with any other fish. It's survival of the fittest.Anything with him, will try to kill him, because he's defective.Even normally peaceful fish, will attack a sick or injured fish. Nature sees to it,that only the healthy and strong survive.

well, I think he can stay in the tank he is in, there is no aeration just the non airstobe box filters going in the tank, which doesn't really aerate the water, it mostly agitates it, but I will make sure he gets a nice long 6" airstone. thanks guys!
