| Goldies sitting in the corner The last couple of weeks, i've noticed that during the day the goldies mostly all sit on the bottom in the corner of the tank.
i usually have the tanks lights off during the day, due to some sun exposure and to keep the algae down and turn on the lights at night when we get home.
used to be, that during the day, the goldies just kinda floated around slow, mellow and relaxed and they would liven up at night when the lights go on.
usually, only when a goldie was sick, they would sit in that corner. now they ALL sit in that corner together.
we did a water change and vacuum last week, and added their salt, no change in behavior, still sittin in the corner.
i checked the water today, all parameters perfect, except water hardness was at the max, but usually that's not an issue.
when i turn on the lights, they all come wiggling over and make kissy faces and "feed me" faces and they all eat, good, swim good, look good. no signs of bloating, ICH, color change.
its just seems weird that they all just hang in the corner all day now. should i be worried? any thoughts? |

Carol | nope, nothing has changed with their lights on / lights off schedule or their daily interaction.
i thought maybe somebody laid some eggs in the little plant over there or in the little collusium near there, but i havn't seen any evidence of that.
other than that they seem fine, just seems bizarre that they spend so much time sitting in that corner. |

| If they're still active when they see you, I'd guess that they've just decided they like to sleep in that corner. My goldfish swim into the corner of their tank in the afternoon and rest on the bottom. They look like they're just napping, so it could be similar with your goldies. |

Yep when they see mom, they definately do the happy wiggle dance.
maybe i'll just do a little garlic and fish protector to be sure. |

| What is the water temp? If it is too hot or too cool, my fish are not as active unless it is feeding time. During the hot part of the summer days, my goldfish all sit at the bottom of the pond in the shade of the lillies. In the winter when it is colder, they sit at the bottom of the pond in the roots of the lillies (almost like a blanket to help keep them warm). |

| It might be a bit warm for them. Goldfish are a cool water fish. Mine seem happiest when the water is 68 to 72 degrees farenheit. Do you have a heater in their tank? Or is that just the normal room temp? If it is the normal room temp, you may try dropping a couple of ice cubes in and see what happens. I put big chunks of ice in when we defrost our freezer in the summer and mine like to swim right under it. |

| Oh geez, am I glad that I found this post. My single goldfish has been doing that same thing recently, and I must admit, I was kinda getting worried...I had checked and checked my readings, but they kept coming up normal, and he would always perk up and swim for a bit when stuck my face near the glass. So then I began to worry about parasites...I am really glad that it's not just my goldfish.
The temperature thing makes sense in my case too, cause the temp in my tank is about 76 degrees, and thats a bit higher than it was before, when he was acting normal... |

Minx has her goldies in a proper size tank.
Unfortunately, your tank isn't large enough for the bio load a goldfish produces. You should check your ammonia, nitriates and nitrates. Last edited by Lucy; September 8th, 2008 at 10:12 PM.

| Yep, my goldie load is pretty light now.
I was so heart broken when little Gordie died, that I havn't had the desire to replace him. I still miss his little wiggle every day
i'm amazed at how some can lose their fin babies and go out within a day or two and re-fill. i could never do it. i have to wait till my heart is a little healed and the thought of them doesn't make me as sad.
then i kinda just start looking and see if anything looks interesting as a replacement. but i'm not to that point yet. still missin' Gordie, RIP. |

| Oh no, that's horrible. My goldfish always like to lie in a specific area. But whenever somebody approaches, they go to the surface to beg for food, they are so lively. I don't know what I'd do if they died... |

Hopefully I'll be able to upgrade within a year, so that I don't have to do water changes quite so often. |

| Good job on the extra water changes. I'm really glad you realize(as so many don't) their extra needs in that environment.
I am a little concerned that you have cool water fish (goldfish) and tropical fish (Otos) in the same tank though. They do have different needs.

| I don't think Ottos who like softer water would really be suited to the pH the goldfish need. Also the same with the temp. Goldfish like it cooler (I have a koi and goldfish pond). And Ottos like it warmer and are very fussy about clean water. (a good mate for Discus).
Back to your situation. We have a similar one. My mom keeps her 2 goldies in a 30 gal tank with weekly water changes and everyone is super happy. Also she keeps it very cool. Lights out during the day and they come alive when the lights are on and its feeding time. (think they sleep more than we think) I think its normal for them to hang out and be relaxed. If they didn't wake up and act happy about dinner time. Then I would be worried. Cause they love, love, love to eat. |

Once its evening and the lights are on and dinner is served everyone is wiggling like crazy and seems good.
thanks for asking |

| I havn't had goldies for about 10 or 12 years now...when I did have them I only had the normal ones. ( Comets I think they are) some regular finned and some long finned. I had about 6 in a 20 gallon. ( I didn't know ...I DIDN'T KNOWWWW) I got most of them as tiny fry out of a pond my M/I/L had..they were less than an inch long....lol. They never were still they always were swimming around and active and they lasted 10 to 15 years and then I gave away the last few as I wanted to go tropical.....I was overfiltered and I did do regular water changes. I guess I was wondering if yours are the fantails and such or just regular goldies. Fantails and fancies seem to be more quiet and slow that the regulars...hope all works out for you and they stay healthy and happy...good luck. |
