Gold fish mysteriously turned white, urgent help needed

HI all,

I have 3 Goldfishes from the past 3 yrs..
They are all healthy and growing really well.
But off late one of them mysteriously started to turn white! (except the tail fins which have faint hints of Gold in it)
Now its almost turned into a white fish from a Gold fish

I really have no idea if the water is the culprit or something else.
how ever it does not show any signs of restlessness or in-activeness...
Its infact grown tremendously and is very active?
Now i would love to see it get its color back..
what do i need to do, and what could be the cause?

Please help

Hi Wrapster welcome to Fish Lore

A few things everyone needs to know to help you.
What size tank are they in?
What are your readings for ammonia, nitrite and nitrates?
Are there any other fish in the tank?

It is normal for goldfish to change color, whether to white or not, I don't know.

Good luck.

It's not normal for them to change colors as adults, as far as I know.
It does happen, though, if they are kept in warm water. Is there a heater in the tank, or is your house pretty much always at or above 76 degrees? If either is the case, that would explain the bleaching.

oh!!!
Well i just started off with a tank thats about 16gallons(US)
And there are about 11 other fishes as well.
I have not got the equipments as yet to check the nitrate levels but am very sure that the tmp is about 80'F

In the place i live, its pretty hard to come by equipments that test for nitrates
So are there any tests that i can do right away?

gold fish naturally change colour as they grow, your tank is extremely overstocked

Oh, dear, yes, it is over stocked. The 3 goldfish alone need a larger tank.
What kind of other fish and how many of each kind?
If they're tropical fish, they're temperature requirements are probably different than your gold fish.

Do you know about the nitrogen cycle? If not, please read this:

goldfish are cold water fish. they need a cold water tank that is at least 20 gallons for the first goldfish and 10 gallons for every extra goldfish. and the other fish need a bigger tank also since it was already mentioned that you are severely overstocked and the tetras, rosy barb and silver dollars are schooling fish.

you also need to read about the nitrogen cycle.

Btw, Welcome to Fishlore

Is the fish itself white, or is it possibly an infection causing it to look white?

ie... Fuzzy, thin, white coating on the body and fins. Looks like a fungus
