Its just "BETTER" to put them in a bigger tank than a 10 gallon.

Sadly, this is incorrect information.
2 years is not a long time in the life of a goldfish, and because the goldfish
survives doesn't mean it
thrives. A human can
survive in a 10ft by 10ft room with no plumbing and the waste being cleaned out once a week, but that person will be sick the entire time.
The reason fish stop growing is not some magical response to the size of the body of water they are in. It is, pure and simple, that they are being poisoned. Goldfish produce far more waste than nearly any other fish their size, and this waste builds up between water changes. When swimming in, breathing, and swallowing this waste, the body spends more time and energy fighting off the effects of being poisoned than it does fighting off illness and growing. In addition, the fish's organs continue growing, albeit at a slower rate, even once the body stops growing. The organs become compacted, and will eventually fail. The fish's life will be severely limited by this.
It is my opinion that if you don't want to spend the time, money, and effort to keep a pet happy, you shouldn't get that pet. It doesn't matter if it's as high functioning as a pig or as stupid as a tarantula.
And there are coldwater fish that can live in a 10g tank. White Cloud Minnows and mosquito fish would do fine.
