New Problem

We have a 55g aquarium that has three goldfish in it, 1 shubunkin, 1 comet, and 1 fantail. WE want to switch our tank over to tropical, and put our fish in our pond. Only, we don't want to put our fantail in there. What would be safer, putting it in the pond or with the tropical fish?

well if your afraid of losing it..you will most likly lose it in the tropical set up..so the pond without a questoin is the safer way to go..and if you really dont want ot put it in the pond..invest in another tank..or find a new home for it

Keeping it with the tropicals means an exponentially shorter lifespan, as well as increased likelyhood of disease due to stress lowering the immune system of the goldfish. Disease will harm your tropicals as well as the goldfish. In my opinion the choice is clear.

some are very sensitive to colder waters and are therefore dificult to raise in cooler waters

Swords, could you elaborate on what you mean? Goldfish are temperate water fish, and are all comfortable in temperatures ranging from 55-70 degrees farenheit.

Fantails aren't as hardy over winter like the common and comets. They do have the same temp span, but they aren't as hardy when it comes to lower temps. They are also slower, making them more vulnerable to predators.
Is this what ur asking?

I understand what you're saying now, I believe. You were speaking of when the temperatures go below their level of comfort as to which is least hardy, gotcha.

However for ponds that are more than a foot (12 inches/30cm) deep and are in ground ponds the bottom of the pond shouldn't go lower than 53-56 degrees here in the USA.

Thanks for elaborating.

Ya thats how ours is
I think it is like something deeper than 18in. We do leave our fish in overwinter so that is what I was concerned about. Although, my grandpa has an oranda in his pond mistaking it for a fancy tail goldfish and it still lives through. He bought for like $2 and hes had for over a year now and its at about the size of a $27.
