I would recommend an external pressure filter with a uv bulb...I got mine from drsfostersmith.com - my outdoor pond is a preformed about 150 gallons. I don't have any gravel in the bottom so I can vacuum it out occasionally. I put my lilly bulbs in a plastic mesh bag (like tomatoes sometimes come in) with 3-5 pieces of landscape gravel (1-2 inch chunks of rock) for weight and just toss them in the pond. The roots and leaves can grow through the mesh, the rocks keeps them weighted down, when I clean, I can rinse off the roots and toss them back in the pond. I have two waterfalls to help with aeration and circulation. The pump sits in the bottom of the pond and pumps to the external filter which then goes through the waterfalls back into the pond. The only thing I wish I had different was a skimmer. I don't have a place to put one in my pond without it being obvious, and because it is a preformed surrounded by rock and block, I have no place to put one on the outside of my pond. If possible, you may also want to consider some mosquito fish to help with the mosquito larvae. Goldfish will eat some, but the mosquito fish really devour them. I call mine little pirahna fish because of the way the attack the little cubes of tubifex worms I feed them.
