Confuzzlified!

?

TODAY i just bought my 3 new goldfish type fish. However i am concerned about one of them, i was looking on ways to tell of sex and when i read about the white pimple like spots i immediately checked my fish where i noticed one on one side was MISSING a small bunch of scales. I am only 14 and only had one other goldfish which was kept in a bowl when i was very small. Also is it OK that i have 3 young/small fish in a cool 14 tank which holds approx. 3 galls of water and says about 1 fish per gallon of water? i keep reading that its wrong but in not sure, its fairly wide and deep and is also fairly tall. i have a blackmoore, a common bright goldfish and i have a v.small koi-like one to, is it just a colour of goldfish or is it a different breed? any info on my 3 questions would be GREAT! thanks, LaydeeBugg xxx

P.s i was also told that the fish will only grow depending on the size of their environment is that true or just a load of balony?

Also are you sure they need about5-20galls for one fish? it says on the box that its about 1 and I'm sure all the information has to be right otherwise it is not aloud to be published on packaging and on the leaflets, my fish are only very small fish their body is hardly more than the size of my thumb (excluding tail) so i really dot think huge tanks are really that necessary, do you think I'm right or I've got the concept ENTIRELY wrong?

Re: Confuzzlified!

Three goldfish should be in ABSOLUTELY nothing smaller than a 40g tank. One inch of adult fish per one gallon of water DOES NOT hold true for goldfish or any other bulky, high bioload fish. (Bioload is the amount of waste such as poo and pee the fish makes)

I would suggest either returning the fish or buying a larger tank to house them. It is complete bologna that fish only grow to the size of their environment. That is thought by less knowledgable keepers/stores because they will usually die as a result of being poisoned on their own bioload (pee and poo) building up at higher levels faster in the tank as they grow. I am 100% sure they need 20 gallons for the first goldfish and 10 gallons ATLEAST for each goldfish after that, with really good filtration and atleast once a week waterchanges.

The koi is a different fish that gets to 36 inches in length and need a 200 gallon tank, due to size. Koi are 99.9999% of the time kept ONLY in ponds. If the box says you can keep a goldfish in the size of tank you said you have the box is ----WRONG----. Thank you for showing enough concern to ask the questions, and I will thank you in advance, because I hope you are going to grow into a good fishkeeper, which would mean you would do right by the fish.
