Fantails & Telescope eye compatibility

I recently added 4 telescope eye goldfish to my 55gal tank that already houses my 2 fantails. One fantail is 3" coming around to 4". The other is almost 2", and all the telescope eyes areabout 2" as well. I was watching them this morning and kept seeing the big fantail chase the telescope eyes around. He is a he (dots on gills) and ready to breed. But I'm afraid that he is being too rough with the telescope eyes and they might not make it if this keeps going on. Before he would do that to the other fantail, but I think the little one might be a boy too cuz he started doing the same thing. I thought they would be ok because of their similar body shape but I wanted to make sure. I'd love to hear what people have to say, or if anyone has kept different kinds of fancy goldfish together.

Re: Fantails & Telescope eye compatibility

As far as I know, goldfish aren't really territorial, but it could be a species by species thing (I've got a common goldfish housed with a koi, and they are the best of buds). At the very least, I'd make sure there are plenty of hiding places, like plants (real or plastic, it doesn't matter), for the smaller goldfish to hide if they're being chased.

Re: Fantails & Telescope eye compatibility

I have several different types of Fancy Goldfish together and they get along just fine. They even swim together allot and follow each other around all the time. It sounds like he may be just trying to breed when the others aren't ready. How recent is recent? Is he chasing all 4 new additions or just 1?

Re: Fantails & Telescope eye compatibility

Recent like yesterday. He usually chases the one that is closest to him. Lately the telescope ones have taken refuge in one of the plants. I'll keep an eye on them and see how it goes.

Maybe he thinks that they are ready to spawn?
