Re: how many gold fish had u had?

I have kept about 45 goldfish, and 5 koi so far. about 30 goldfish have died and one koi because they have many bad run ins with raccoons and neighbors cats. Now we installed a top pond full of cheap feeder goldfish so that they are easier for the predetors to catch and they ignore our koi. I had a beutiful shubunkin and an asagi koi killed by a few raccoons after they chewed apart our filter and pump and caused the water level to go down to about 3 inches. My neighbor has about 250 goldfish right now becuase she used to keep 6 huge 1 foot commons in her pond for about 6 years then suddenly one summer she had a couple thousand and slowly the number has dimineshed because of herons and other predation.

Re: how many gold fish had u had?

Nope, I keep goldfish, koi, native species and tropical fish. I have been trying to convince my neighbor that she also needs a tropical tank, she wouldn't have to worry about the predation and she could pay me to keep it healthy=money for me.

I'm doing a great job with Goldfish. Goldfish is the fish that i've started this hobby with. I bought 2 Comets nearly a year ago, they r still doing fine.

Re: how many gold fish had u had?

They can't because of the different temperature requirements. Goldfish wouldn't be happy in warm water.

Instead of buying the hundreds of dollars worth of chiller... this is what I do. You can put a little bag of ice in a bag and float it until they melt.. I do that when it gets really hot.. but make sure you get a thermometer so you can watch how much you cool it down. Sometimes I'll pop a few ice cubes into the filter and let it pump out some cold water for a few minutes. Keeping the light off will help. If it's near a window, cover it from the sunlight. You could also point a fan at the tank. It'll cool the water but speed up evaporation so you'll have to change the water sooner.

Good luck!

Re: how many gold fish had u had?

I had 5.

Goldfish do not like warm water. A temperature not to exceed 75 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal. They can, in fact, be kept outside in ponds that freeze on the surface for the winter as long as there is plenty of water beneath the ice. Goldfish are perfectly happy at room temperatures, provided it does not get too warm. They also eat quite a lot and make a mess. Therefore, they must not be crowded, and should have very efficient filtration and aeration of their tank water. They are not at all particular about the water parameters and will adjust to just about any pH or hardness as long as there is no abrupt change. They require a diet very high in vegetable matter, and should always have some form of vegetable like zucchini or romaine lettuce, or sacrificial aquarium plants, available for their grazing. Of final but critical importance: give them plenty of room - at least two or three times what you would normally give to tropical fish. A good rule of thumb is to allow at least 5 gallons of water per inch of goldfish.
