In my opinion, you should wait to get your goldfish until you have a tank big enough for him. Goldfish just can't thrive in small tanks because they produce too much waste. A one gallon tank would be way way way too small for a goldfish!
As for keeping him with other fish, goldfish do best with other goldfish because they like colder waters than tropical fish.
If you want to keep fish in a smaller tank, goldfish are totally not the fish to pick. They need lots and lots of space ... more than many species of fish! Bettas are much better fish to keep in smaller tanks because they only need 2-5 gallons per fish (though they love more!) and you'd only be keeping one anyway, so you wouldn't need to worry about trying to fit a school into a little tank. You could also get an aquatic frog like an african dwarf frog instead.
