Ghost shrimp babies!

I bought 6 shrimp from petsmart a week or so ago, all of which had eggs. I put 3 in a betta bowl, and 3 in a Triop tank, I have a main 3 gal shrimp tank for the non-pregnant shrimp (Only 3, I bought these before the pregnant ones). In the triop tank, 2 died, I fed them to my fish . Today, one of my ghost shrimp dropped *most of* her eggs. So, I looked around the tank and lo-and-behold! 5-6 baby ghosties, about the length of a grain of rice! She has about 8 more eggs on her, so I'm leaving her in the tank until shes let go of them all. There is plenty of stuff for them to eat, so I am pretty certain they will live. I am not going to change any water until they are big enough to easily see. Wish me luck, I still have 3 more shrimp with tonsa eggs on em!

How did you get them to breed?

Re: Ghost shrimp babies!

Well, they were already pregnant when I got them. Apparently its not getting them pregnant thats hard, its raising the babies. I have the pregnant ones in "betta bowls". Once they have their babies I put them in a 3-gal shrimp-only tank. Another one had some of her babies today, she still has some eggs on her still.

Yeah, I heard that they need to be raised in brackish water.

Re: Ghost shrimp babies!

Nope, the shrimp I am talking about are FW. A little salt wouldn't hurt them however.

Re: Ghost shrimp babies!

Wow, that's pretty cool that you have baby ghosties. I'll bet they are so tiny still! Cool, good luck with that!

Re: Ghost shrimp babies!

Really that's a bummer. What happened? Did they all get eaten or what? Kind of ironic, but after I said that I wish my ghost shrimp would have babies, I noticed that one of mine had eggs on her, so I'll have to see when she lays them

Re: Ghost shrimp babies!

They were getting bigger already, then somehow my dogs mustve knocked a bunch of food in their tank and they died from it.

Re: Ghost shrimp babies!

My shrimp had her babies and died shortly after. I am going to try VERY hard for these to live.

Re: Ghost shrimp babies!

Hopefully they will make it. Sorry to hear that the female died after giving birth to the eggs.
