One dead, one MIA...

Well, we had 2 Ghost Shrimp and loved them, Pierre and Jon Claude.

We didn't see them for two days, but they are hard to see and we are pretty well planted, so I didn't think anything about it.

Today we found half of Pierre sucked up in the filter. Jon Claude is still missing. What could have caused him to die? What could have happened? We have a 20 g tank with: 3 guppies, 4 glowfish, 3 cory cats, and 3 ghost catfish.

I just don't know what could have happened. It makes me very sad.

Is there any way I can keep my next set from getting sucked up??

"half of pierre..." is it possible this is just part of an exoskeleton, and the real pierre is hiding somewhere? Or are you sure this was the real deal?

If you're sure it was the actual shrimp and not just the exoskeleton after a molt, then this leads me to ask the following.

Is your aquarium info correct, that your tank is only 3 days old; and that you do not know about the nitrogen cycle? As far as I know, inverts are even more sensitive to ammonia/nitrite produced during cycling and might have caused the death. If you haven't already done so, I recommend finding the detailed information on this site about the nitrogen cycle.. and if someone here doesn't beat me to it I will edit this post once I find it.

you can cover the intake with either some nylon hose (never been used or been in the washer), or with a piece of filter media or filter sponge and attach it with rubber bands or string.

if i haven't said it before, welcome to fishlore!

the link that haedra posted on the nitrogen cycle is definitely important to the health of your fish, as they can be exposed to toxic levels of ammonia and nitrIte, if you know nothing else about fish, the cycle is definitely the one thing to know!

Update! We found them! It was just his exoskeleton! Turns out, they were both alive and just being sneaky! lol

p.s.-- We do know about the nitrogen cycle. Our tank is about three weeks old.
