Ridiculous, Utterly Ridiculous...

This is utterly ridiculous...I really think that this is just a scam or a joke. Does this person realize that he'll need a tank 600 times larger just to house that one arapaima?

Sounds like somebody that got in over their head. It's just mind boggling how many people buy little fish(that turn into big fish) and don't plan for their future.

Which is why I'm shocked that Liveaquaria carries them. Of course, they're always out of stock, but...

I disagree with some people when they say that red-tailed catfish and arowanas should only be kept in public aquaria, because I think that with a proper, large tank, they could be cared for...however, the arapaima really is one of those fish that should not be attempted to be kept by the ordinary aquarist.

I'm not disagreeing with the point your making but just want to point out that most people (especially the average or novice aquarist) don't have the facilities to handle the "monster" fish species. It can be done but is a lot of time money and commitment that the folks who walk into the LFS and say "aw it's cute let's take it home" usually don't have.

As to the arapaima...

I think you might need to go up to 10 gallons to house this one roflmbo

I think when they say a 'little TLC' they really mean that they realized that there is no way they can keep that fish and they are trying to pawn it off to someone else...
